Auto dimming mirror with compass and temperature

Has anyone wired an auto dimming mirror with compass and temperature into their 90's, maybe early 2000's vehicle?

I put an auto dimming compass mirror into our G8 a few weeks ago and I love it so much I want to get one for our 97 Silverado. However, the G8 and the 97 are totally different styles of mirror, the G8 has the buttons for OnStar etc, the 97 would be just compass and temp.

If you have done this, I'd like to know what vehicle you used to donate the mirror and temperature sensor. I know I want a mirror with the 7 pin connector, not the 16 pin connector but beyond that, I would like to know what wrecks to search in.

GMT-800's.... (new style '99 to old style '07) Put one in my '91 T-Jimmy back in the early 2000's.... Have another to go in my '98 GMT-400 (new style '88 to old style '99)  one of these days...

Do you have a picture of it?

Is it the one with COMP and TEMP on the buttons, 7 pin on the back? Does it look like this? mirror.jpg

I hope you don't mind if I piggyback on your thread Carl.

My mirror in my 2006 Sierra has the "mirror finish" dulling and corroding from the inside, and I want to switch it out. I'd like to know if the mirror that Carl has pictured would work also. I have a factory "manual" mirror with just the airbag display right now.

I'd also like to know if anyone, or if it is possible to, put another GM model's (car's) mirror in it's place.

Thanks, Darryl.

The more the merrier Darryl, glad to give you a piggyback ride!

The wiring is actually quite easy. I just need to find out what vehicles have the 7 pin auto dim with compass and temp. From my reading online I've found it's all either Gentex or Donnely in all the vehicles out there and I know I prefer the style of the Gentex.

I just need to get to a U-Pick wrecker to find the right car/truck that has the right mirror and temp sensor in it still.

Hmmm,  this is an interesting idea Carl,   i could do this conversion in my dads 91 silverado too.  Thanks, now i have more stuff to look for at he junkyard?

How do you wire the compass? and where is the sensor,  is there a wire harness to unplug under the dash, and is the sensor outside the vehicle?

Did the '99 / 2000 Denali have temp? Still the same body style. My '98 pickup only has compass.

I don't know how close to the truck's mirror the Cadillac ones are, but I see these dimming/temp mirrors

at Pick n Pull and Buck's all the time....and cheap. I have one from a 1985 Seville, I think cost me under $20.00.

No.... You have to get the same, at least with the PPS (Passenger Presence System air bag) type.... They work hand in hand... There is an RPO on the mirrors as well....

Compass is built in....

Ambient air temp sensor bolts in front of the rad area...

With vehicles that are factory, harness is built in.... Make your own.... I did!

WOW... that's 10+ years ago already.... no

Yes, the compass just needs to be calibrated. I had to read online how to do it on the G8 when I put the Trailblazer mirror in it. You get it to show "CAL", then drive in slow circles until it works, pretty simple!

Dave, if you do happen to get over to Buck's before I do, can you let me know if you see some like in the picture? That is exactly the one I want.

Will do.  So just to confirm,  i grab the mirror and cut off as much length of harness as i can easily get at,  then go under the hood and find the temp sensor around the rad area, again cut off as much wire as possible with the pigtail.  Then i can make up a harness once im back home.   Any other pieces required?

That should be perfect.

I love the auto dim. And I miss the outdoor temp in the truck. I put an aftermarket thermometer in my other 97 but it looks so nice if it's in the mirror.

That's Cool in the radio for sure. I saw some neat stuff at Sema , there was a Chinese outfit there with all kinds of mirrors where they do all this stuff ,temp, clocks, signal lites in the door mirrors all that for vintage and muscle cars ...

One more question:

I see pin #1 (pink) and pin #3 (green) both go to an ignition power souce.  What is the difference/   or should one be constant and one be ign?

Shows green running thru backup lamp, or is that just for a comon fused?

Green goes to backup to defeat the auto dim when you are backing up. I've never bothered with that feature.

Pink to ignition, black to ground and I had it in my head there was one more you need to connect but I could be wrong.

My truck has the overhead console with map lights in it but if your truck has no map lights Dave you may want to see if there's a mirror that has them and put that style in. I'm pretty sure some of the car mirrors have them.

Ahh,  that explains the backup lamp wiring.  Ya, i would do away with that too.  so all i need is 4 wires

Positive

Negative

In to the air temp sensor

Out from the air temp sensor

My mirror has a little lever on it to dim   Can I buy a electric motor to move IT up and down?     I usually open a window to check the temp.   lol

An auto dimming mirror is like A/C Carl, once you've had it you never go back...

I believe that for the GM units, one wire is connected to the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) Not sure why, but if you have speed compensated volume on the radio, can connect it there - it was green wire on my 2001 Silverado.

As you can see in both those GM schematics, the LT/GREEN is connected to voltage via the back up switch....as stated, to disable the auto dimming feature while in reverse... there is no provision in the mirror for SCV...

My bad, did this about 10 yrs ago, ...gotta stop posting info as wiring I referred to was for the OH console, not a mirror.
