In 1972 the GTO was an option on the basic LeMans so when ordering the car you would start with the basic car which would have had these dog dish style hub caps. You would order the GTO option and in 1972 part of that option was Wheel Discs according to the Salesman's Manual I consulted. You could also order Rally II or Honeycomb wheels. In other years the the wheel treatment varied for the GTO model but usually included an upgraded wheel treatment usually wheel discs, although it is rare to see them that way.
Our dear departed friend Hillar's 1968 GTO came form Arizona, it was a white roof car with Nassau Blue bottom with wire wheel covers originally, he changed it to one solid colour and added Rally I.
In 1973 the GTO option included special baby moon hub caps which are different from the basic dog dish.
Here are a number of GM - Pontiac promotional and press photos, I can't find any that have dog dish, except 1973 as I noted......

NOTE the wheel discs on this 1972 - Wheel Discs with black wall tires are shown as part of the GTO option in the Salesman's Manual I consulted.

In High Performance Pontiac back in the mid 1990s there was a similar 1972 GTO featured. It was Cardinal Red with the side stripes but it also had a white vinyl roof cover. The original owner still had it at the time of the feature. It also had been ordered with the base hub caps, but the owner being a high school shop teacher meant he took a lot of ridicule for the caps. He returned to the dealer soon after and bought 15x7 Honeycombs. His was a 400 4-speed with 3.55 Safe-T-Track.
The Mecum car was sold new in Western New York. 455 H.O. with an M22, nice! It would have a 3.55 12-bolt rear. To me it isn't hard to imagine it being ordered with the standard hub caps; the owner probably was going to put on mags as soon as he took possession. Car Craft tested a trio of new 1972 Pontiacs in one issue; a Ventura II with a 350, a GTO Hardtop Coupe with a 455 H.O. & M22, plus a Trans Am (455 H.O. was the only way those came in 72). All the test cars had aftermarket mags installed during the test

Cam, the Salesman Manual I have indicates that the Wheel Disc is included with the 1972 GTO option, not the base Hub Cap, so the Gold car I show is the basic GTO package according to the literature I have at my disposal. Unfortunately I'm not able to scan the pages due to technical difficulties right now. Having said that I will make a provisio, we have seen inaccurate GM documents in the past but I have to think that the Gold Car press photo was taken to illustrate the basic GTO Package.
