The one-of-one car I'm chasing (red 1969 2+2 427/490 4-speed convertible)


I know where this car is, I've talked to the owner, but he's pushing 70 and "going to restore it one day".  Of course true or not, he has no reason or motivation to sell it.

Does anyone know if it would be a one-of-one?  It's a 427/390 (so L36) with the M-21 or M-22 (says Muncie on the shifter is all I know).  Red on red in a convertible 2+2.  I've never heard even rumor of another...

Wow, you NEED to buy that car! I am quite sure it will be an M20 (wide ratio) because I don't think a close ratio (M21) or rock crusher (M22) was offered in that model.

I'd say the owner liked to drive at a high rate of speed-especially at night. Auxillary driving lights and those high beams don't look stock. As you know that is a MAJOR find. The hope diamond of 69 Pontiacs..

I've known the owner for over 25 yrs and don't think he will ever do anything with it.
I still have a sticky on my computer with the 427 Emblem, part # 731691, he needs.

That's funny, because I sent him the other emblems he needed but he didn't restore the car! That's part of the deal of me sending rare parts for free, you gotta actually restore it

I actually thought I'd sent him an old (used) 427 emblem after I secured my NOS pair.  Might have been someone else.  Maybe he was missing both?

Have you ever checked the cowl data?  I've never seen a picture, and just assume he knows it's the real deal and has no reason to think otherwise.

It's been several years since he moved the car from the city and that's the last time I saw it.

He showed me the one 427 Emblem he had and he wrote the # down knowing I get around old cars and that I knew what it was.

I never checked the cowl tag or saw the engine as he had it rebuilt and stashed away.

I used to deal with him often as we were in the same business but he smoked so much I never stayed very long inside!!

Luckily for me convertibles aren't my thing or I would have tried, unsuccessfully no doubt, to buy it back then.

Come to think of it I know another guy with a 1968 427, I'll have to stop in and visit him one day.

Another case of "I'll restore it sometime" syndrome? Maybe. Hope not.

I really hope you get a shot at it Dave. It will take someone with serious resources to give it the restoration it deserves.

Would you use the same place that did your Laurentien?

I do all my own restoration now, except automatic transmissions and the actual paint. I just did this 1970 GMC and had the paint done at MCR as well. Gets a little pricey shipping them both directions though.

This one they did "flat rate", in that we agreed up front for X dollars plus any metal work. That made it a lot less stressful than the "blank check" approach. I've got 3 years of my own time into this one, a good chunk of that full time!

Cool truck.

I had a 70 Sierra Grande 35 years ago, 400, tach, A/C but red bench.

Did they all have the cab lights, mine had them too.

No, factory cab lights are quite uncommon, and not all that nicey. These are a Yankee or something that was very popular in the day (my Dad's truck had them, my winter truck had them), at least in SK! I liked them as a dressup feature.

This truck is a one-owner as well (not counting the grandson I bought it through after he passed away), so it was well preserved, all there, and mostly unmolested.

Sadly, mine had lived a hard life at a contractors truck prior to me buying it, so it was pretty worn out.

I dropped a 427 in it, added a factory tilt and drove it a few years. Sold the matching numbers 402 out of it and it ended up in a 64 Beaumont, no idea where the truck or engine is today but the truck was still solid and sure would be worth restoring these days.

That's because they were the best looking, best engineered trucks Chev ever made! (with the exception of the lower cab that likes to rust out.

Perfect size, not complicated to fix and could haul a good load

When I drive my 69 around it gets more affectionate conversations started than any of my others.  

Its always the same; "Best truck I ever owned, wish I still had it."

I had a 72 GMC 1/2 ton from Texas (no rust), pretty basic but BB with 3 on the tree (miss those). Seemed like it was 9 mpg empty, towing or hauling. Great Looking trucks
