How do I remove my interior door panels?

I am just about to paint my '66 GP. I'd like to remove the door handles and locks. How can I safely remove the interior panel to get at the parts?

Your car has power windows, right? If not, you need the special tool to remove the window crank clip.

1) Remove the door lock knob by unscrewing it, and the 2 big phillips head screws that hold the armrest on. (Not the little ones beside the big ones)

2) Remove the one screw that holds the door handle on. You'll see it easily once the armrest is off.

3) Use some sort of a flat wide tool to pry the rear of door panel gently away from the door at approximately the 3 locations shown.

4) Repeat step 3 but at the front of the door panel.

5) Grasp the panel at the front and back, tilt it away from the door a couple of inches at the bottom, pull up and back at the same time. You may have to wiggle it around while you are pulling mostly up and a bit back.

Once you have it off, undo your power window connector from the switch. You need to insert just the tip of a small flat screwdriver in between the connector and the back of the switch. I have never shorted it out but if your battery is hooked up I am guessing you might be able to ground the power wire to the switch with the screwdriver, resulting in some big sparks! Maybe just unhook the battery first to be safe. It's better to pry the connector off than yank it off the switch with your hands because you might rip the connector apart by pulling on it.

Hope I got it all covered!

On our 66's the door handle is screwed on, it's even easier than those crazy clips!

Yes, still need it for that.

I think Hardtail's car has power windows though.

Still need the tool for the vent window crank Carl, unless someone like you added power vent windows.
