That wire doesn't come out of the firewall, it goes from the coil to the starter. My coil has a green wire attached to the + side of the coil, about 12" long with a small ring terminal on the other end.
Close up of the original coil from my car. I have never touched the wiring on it...
Another shot showing the length of the wire and the ring terminal on the end.
Based on where the coil lives, and the length of the wire the only place I can see it going is the starter...it's not going to reach anything else.
Starter wires, labelled 40+ years ago. lol
this is where the harness comes our through the firewall, and the ballast resistor is right there. The extra green wire you see is the temp sender wire.
Not sure if any of that helps?

Ran the pertronix in my 57, at first I bypassed the ballast resistor but the car would die after 1-11/2 hrs of driving. Sat on the side of the road everytime for 15 min and then it would start. Hooked back up the ballast and all was good....so thinking you're going to have to run through the ballast resistor or the Pertronix may get too hot. If this is the case best way to fix is as I mentioned in other post.

(pic - just like mine was)

Yes Rene, that helps a lot, thanks - your original wiring is just like mine, so that confirms that my old wiring was correct, and therefore I will have to do something to replace the wire to the + coil terminal with a source that does the same as the "R" Run function of the 3-terminal old starter (which is not present on my new 2-terminal high-torque starter)

Ach! I sure hope I do not encounter that problem, because I am using matching Pertronix distributor and coil, and they say not to use ballast resistor ... maybe I will just hang on to my ballast resistor in case I have the same problem you did.
Thanks for the info!
