How do I test overheating?

I am not sure  if my car is overheating or if I have a faulty temp gauge. I ran my car and at halfway point on my gauge my engine block reads 89c, when the gauge shows that it is 3/4 towards the hot, the engine block reads 115c. I shut the car down at that point. I am not sure what the engine block temp should read, and if I should be taking a temp at the block or somewhere else. Any suggestions appreciated.

The car is a 51 chieftain auto 6 cylinder.

translating into English   the temp is 239 degrees F       should be 160-180     I'd say it was overheating

boil some water in a tin cup/can (can use turbo torch) with your temp anode in it. When water boils (212 deg) you now know where your temp gauge sits at 212.

Assume your using a "heat gun" for temp reading??? did use "hit' the rad to get a temp reading there??? that will let you know if T/stat has opened or rad is plugged, or pump not circulating coolant.
