steering box for 1951 Canadian car

hi     I'm looking for a good steering box for a 1951 4 door Pontiac Silverstreak  or someone that can repair them, my bushing at the pitman arm is moving forward and backward when I move the steering wheel and I am not sure if the casting as well has worn or not.

I had my steering box rebuilt by Custom Steering Gear

He took it from a 4.5 turning of the wheel to 3

167 Steelcase Road W  Unit 12, Markham Ont    Tel  905-475-5533

He is familiar with classics and is a very busy shop.

I would highly recommend him and since you are in Scarborough it might be worth the trip to see him.

Has an extensive background in supplying parts to the stock car crowd.

He owns a vintage GM as well.

hi Cliff

somehow I missed your reply, I still have not fixed the problem but if this guy is that good I will give him a call. Thanks again for the heads up.

You could use a 53-54 model. With slight ajustment on steering side. The 53-54 model has a bearing instead a bushing in it for the output shaft.

The bushings are easy to get. I have a spare if need be. Bronze is softer than cast iron so it's rare to find the casting worn before the bushing. Maybe it seized onto the sector from lack of lubrication. The sector shafts do wear over time as well.
