I wonder what they mean by 503 gas six cylinder. That would either be a 270 or a 302 GMC inline six cylinder motor. I find the dual oil filters and the special oil filler device with cap very interesting. A motor like this was very popular with hot rodders back in the 1950's. Souped up they went like stink and they were super strong in the bottom end. The weight was a draw back though but until the Chev small block came out, all motors were heavy pigs.

That firetruck is a high GVW model GMC so it wouldn't surprise me to see really big six rather than the typical big 302.
At work several decades ago they ran International Fleetstar tractor trailers with 450 c.i.d. straight six gas engines, but the 501 straight six was an option as well.

Cam, what do you mean. What bigger inline six was available that year, other than the 302. I have never heard of any in line GMC motors that were bigger than the 302 for that vintage. Enlighten me on the matter. Cheers. George

Holy guacamole, i just learned a thing or two. These larger inline six cylinder motors of 503 and larger were out there. (I did my own home work on the net). These motors obviously were not very popular with hotrodders back in the fifties, i am going to assume it is because of the great weight. The 270 and 302 GMC in line six cylinder was a main stay of countless hotrodders back then in the fifties. I would love to know of any hotrodders back then that might have used these larger GMC engines for hot rod use. One of life's great wonders is the continued pursuit of knowledge. Cheers. George

I think weight must have been a factor in deciding whether the swap would be popular or not. I'll bet those thick castings and those heavy counterweights & pistons meant that the engine would be heavy. It is a similar situation to some of those long haul diesels where the engine must weigh 2000 pounds. It wouldn't be successful to have a little lightweight block as a weak link in a 600 lb-ft torque monster bossing around a 40,000 lb load.
Another thing was that those large displacement sixes have so much rotational mass and such a long stroke that engine speeds would have to kept quite low, which is normal for a heavy truck use but unlikely for a lead-foot in a hot rod. I don't think the heads or any manifolding were designed for high flow either.
