I have friends in Port Au Port ... one day they were talking about "Scrunchions" ... I thought it would be a good name for my next cat. smile

Scrunchions (Fried Salt Pork)

Scrunchions (a Newfoundland term) are small irregular sizes and shapes of cured salt pork fried golden grown or until all fat is rendered or extracted. It is usually served with fried onions and pork fat over cod fish or fish & brewis.

Brigus, like every other town or city, has their welcome to sign on both ends of the town... the St. John's side of the town has the accessible parking to walk to the sign... I took my oldest niece with me to take pics of all 3 subjects in one frame... there is a slight rocky incline to the sign but I was determined to get the car there for the photos.. She said to me, you are not going to drive up there with the car, are you? But, of course I am, I said and away we went.

Her view, like most females, was one of more leave it than take it when asked her view on the car... She had preferred me to take the GTO or my 10th Anniversary T/Am Firehawk instead of the monstrosity at hand... (lol) She had taken the pics with her phone but looking at the end result, I should have given her mine to take the pics... oh well...

The 14th of Sep was another nice day and I had planned on going to Signal Hill and then to Bell Island... Paul, my buddy who had been on the receiving end of the phone call about the messy slop road in New Liskard, ON, had called in sick and decided to tag along for the tour... we drove along the waterfront in St. John's and lucky enough to see a cruise ship docked there... Up to Signal Hill we went and as luck or the lack of luck would have it, they had road access to the Tower closed to traffic for construction purposes.... no pics to be had up close... what are the odds!

On the way down from the Tower, we had previously passed may of the tourists of the ship, not sure where they hailed from, but one gentleman was quite keen on the car and stopped me to take a look... he wanted a pic of the car and I said I would take a pic of him in return, which I did!

One of my mistakes and regret, not driving to Cape Spear, the most easterly point in North America... Not sure why, but didn't...

We continued our drive around the coast from Torbay, Flatrock to Pouch Cove onward to Portugal Cove to catch the ferry for a 20minute run across the harbor to Bell Island... Bell Island was most famous for its' under ground Iron Ore mines that went out under the ocean waters. Germany purchased ore from the Island and during WW2, the Germans in protest of sanctions placed against them, attacked with a loss of both vessels and life.

At the dock before going up a sharp incline to get to the towns of Bell Island, Paul and myself decided to have dinner... so, we stopped at Dicks for a bite to eat.

After eating we continued up the hill and that's when I noticed a slight flare between 1st and 2nd gear... that's odd, I said to myself and put that note in the back of my head for safe keeping! We toured the Island, seeing for the first time, a crewcab style, '47-'55 (1st) 1953 Chevrolet firetruck... very cool... we visited the access point to the Bell Island Mine tour that goes down one of the mine shafts that we had taken a few years before with Paul and his family..... then back to the dock to await our passage back to Portugal Cove.

Once again, the Estate was spotted on Bell Island and a Facebook special bulletin was once again, dispatched!

After the drive for the day, filled up the car, had supper where she was spotted again at Pizza Delight to that above request and went back to Paradise to Pauls for the night...

Yes, or salt cod or pork or "potted meat" (homemade in a mason jar). My friends have been known to have bear meat.

Good to see the final chapter of your road journal Vince. Very compelling story from start to finish.

I want to take the opportunity to thank Vince and Ken (Cheviac) and Carl for their hospitality while my wife and I were in Saskatchewan and Manitoba last month. We drove from Medicine Hat AB to St. John's NL - more than 10,000 kms. - and in the process got to see the prairies and northern Ontario for the first time. We also spent time in beautiful communities in Ontario and Quebec, took a side trip to the US, and visited friends and relatives in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.

It was - like Vince's - a great trip - maybe not quite as interesting in a GMC pickup as compared to a 70 Safari wagon - but a memorable road trip nonetheless.

Canada sure is a diverse and beautiful country. We are fortunate to live here.

The last few days on the Island were mostly visiting those in order to bid farewell until the next time... Paul, Bell Island trip pal, spent the day tripping around and were both fortunate enough that Targa Newfoundland was holding the Brigus stage when we were there.... neither of us had been to a live viewing.

NOW, where to locate the wagon for best video capture? I decided that next to my family church, St. Patrick's Parish would be a great spot. Paul and Myself helped with taping off the parking lot and then waited for the cars to cruise by.... It was a great day!

When the race was over, all the cars did a parade and when we were leaving the town, we got many thumbs-up on the car along the road out and as we chatted with some guy, a vehicle stalled so myself and Paul jumped out to give him a push start... luckily it was a manual transmission. I believe it was a Chrysler product and the guy behind him said thanks to us and I said something to the sorts, we didn't have to do that sort of thing with GM's... he was driving a 'vette... chuckles all the way around!

I posted a link to an in car view of the race going through the town of Brigus... you can see the wagon, as posted previously in the thread at @ 3:45 mark.

The next few days remained the visiting days and deciding what I was planning for my return trip across the mainland. While at the local Mall in Bay Robert's, they had a copy of the grand opening of the mall in July 22/'76 from the local newspaper displayed on the wall... I was pleasantly surprise that holding center stage in the photo that day looked to be a '70 4-dr h/top.. so I snapped a pic of it and said to myself, how cool is that!

The next day on the way out of St. John's to visit my brothers, the car passed another milestone... again, pics for posterity! Sent a video to Ken, cheviac, thanking him for releasing custody of the car to me and continued on to my destination!

Visited once again and I had found out that one of my school chums had a birthday that day.. so, I went to his hometown, parked against traffic at the sign to his town and snapped another pic... he was pleasantly surprised as he has lived in Calgary for the past 20+ years..

Not really sure what the people turning into the town though... oh well!

The 2nd day before I was to go on the boat back to North Sidney, Sep 22nd was a beauty of a day... A few extra pics around Brigus and a day of extra visits were in order... up near the welcome to Brigus sign and then went to the beach to laze around...
