A shameless bump. What is the ultimate muscle car from the long ago (past). The all time KING. I still say the 1970 Chevelle SS 454 LS6 beast.

Kind of find that hard to believe......From 68 on, SS cars all had big blocks. Before that, the SS package was just a trim option, so a 6 was possible

Thanks

The quickest car at the drag strip I worked at (1966-1969) hands down was a 69 L88 Corvette. Car ran consistant 11.30's on a good day 11.26. I worked in the ET booth and saw hundeds of time slips. The Corvette had headers,slicks,4:88 gear and a good tune.

Agreed, I used to drag race a green 1970 LS6 Chevelle automatic with 4:10 gears and it could run 12.2.

It was stock but with slicks and uncorked exhaust

Next best was a blue 1967 Chevelle, 350 HP. 396, 4speed, 4:10 gears it could run 12.7

It was also stock with slicks and closed exhaust.

This was no credit to me other than my superior driving skill !!!

Both were used cars but both were very strong.

I've raced many other stockers over the years but none were 12 second cars.

Thanks

Randy

Will be a unpopular opinion on a GM board, but I would have to say anything with a Hemi.  In stock form they would work well, but put on some day 2 stuff to open them up and they would turn into monsters.  I've never had one myself, but the people who have say that the main difference between Hemis and other engines from the time is that they would never run out of power, they would just keep pulling right up through the rpm range, which is a testament to their ability to breathe.

There is a reason that the basic engine design was chosen to power just about every top fuel car over the years.

That said, I think the Buick Stage 1 deserves a mention as well.  Endless torque.

The Hemis were monsters of course, but they didn't hit as hard as some other engines off the mark, but once you got near the end of the quarter mile those monsters were waking up. They also had to be kept in tune by somebody who knows how.

I don't think there is a single undisputed King of musclecars, people are still arguing & lining them up, which is healthy.

Even Studebaker made a few supercharged R-3 Avantis & humble Cruisers that could wipe the smirk off of peoples faces.

Ford really dedicated themselves to dominating motorsport for a time. I mean they finished (an accomplishment in itself) the 24 hours of LeMans in 1966 in 1st, 2nd & 3rd place, ahead of Ferrari. Look at the 427 AC Cobra, the '64 Thunderbolt Fairlane.

GM had class and the potential hardware, but their lawyers reminded them of liability and the top brass put the choke on. I mean an L-88 into a Chevelle could have easily been done. GM was more into civilized muscle, meanwhile Chrysler was into Hemi Darts & Barracudas in primer with plexiglass side windows without winder mechanisms, 440 six pack Road Runners with lift-off hoods & no hubcaps. Mopar wasn't afraid to get serious about the musclecar game.

Gotta love an LS-6 Chevelle. Back in 1970 my grade 2 teacher traded in her 1969 Chevelle SS396 4-speed for a a new 1970 LS-6 Chevelle with a rock crusher 4-speed. Seriously, she drove it to school every day in good weather and stored it every winter. It looked exactly like this one, in fact I thought this was the very car, except this one was sold new in Edmonton:

When I was in high school, our gym teacher female was Anne Murray, she drove a 289 mustang fast back, Larry the male gym teacher drove a dark green cougar 390. I think your teacher wins the car parade for teachers.

 Not THE Anne Murray?!

It's funny, the LS-6 teacher used a 1964 Beaumont 2-door post as her winter beater. It was de-badged, black with silver blue fogging along the fender peaks, chrome reverse wheels, aftermarket gauges, a small white racing steering wheel and 4-speed floor shift. Of course it had racing stickers in the rear quarter windows. By 1972 it was getting rusty & the custom paint was cracking & fading. She sold it and bought a new 1972 Olds 442, but this one had a 350 & an automatic with a dual gate floor shift & a nice 4-spoke steering wheel. The last time I saw her or her cars was 1973. They still had the LS-6 and they always stored it in bad weather.

This was the teacher. I sort of had a crush on her when I was in her class.

I have seen pictures of this car also. It was a pre- production car built for advertising. The drivers Side was SS trim, and the passenger side was Malibu trim. The car had a six cylinder and there is a publicity photo with the hood up and you can just see the six cylinder air cleaner.

The 63 Max Wedge Dodge has to be up there for street performance. Either way, I think it made for a pretty serious and intimidating look.

Buddy had a Black 63 220, and even with a 383 it stormed pretty good. So even after all these years I still love them.

For sure!

Didn't Car & Driver test one that recorded an astounding 0-60 in 4.4 seconds? Knowing Pontiac they may have sent a "ringer".

Before the decree from top GM brass, Pontiac was known for putting pictures of Pontiacs smoking the tires right in the brochures, I love that!
