March 2017 Feature Car

CdnGMfan wrote:

Oh man, I love it! The thing is, those 65s, in fact any V8 Canadian Big Pontiacs through 1967 just said "V8" on the front fenders. Usually it meant there was a 283 under the hood. There was a black 65 Parisienne Custom Sport in my home town that I used to pass every day on my way to school back in the early 1970s. It looked the same as the feature car. I would guess it was just a 283 Powerglide. A 409 4-speed, don't let that one die! Sweet! One of the best looking cars of the sixties.

I'm sure you noticed that my bro couldn't resist putting a small 409 call out badge on the drivers side.  it would have been fitting if Pontiac had done that.  Understated but significant. As for good looking I don't know.  More evil with a toothy kind of grin. (ala Stephen King)

Hey Fred, I just finished reading Mike Love's bio (The old beach boy) In it he states when they recorded the engine noise for the song 409 they used a "326" engine.  Must have been a typo or he doesn't know much about cars but I guess none of them had a 409 at the time. I'm quite sure he meant a 327. The co-writer of the song (Gary Usher) states that it was a 348 and that he wanted a 409 but couldn't afford one at the time so that's what got taped in front of the house for the track intro.

This kind of careless stuff about cars is why I rate the movie "My Cousin Vinny" so highly.  Aside from having the most gorgeous actress of the time on there she spouts off car stuff correctly and accurately.  What a turn on for car guys!

Great choice as monthly feature.
I'm sort of partial to 65 CS survivors but an original 409 car trumps all else.
The story of the car, the transplant and then re-coupling just adds to its appeal.

I love this car, and its battle scars!

Some cars are not meant to be restored, just drive and enjoy them. This survivor is one of them!

Many years ago, my brother had a red '65 CS with a 409 4 speed. That car was a blast to drive.

Thanks for bringing back the great memories!

Amazing that so much of the original could be put back together after living (surviving) an "exciting" life!

It's a terrific car. Part of me says "restore it!". Part says "Leave that thing alone!" The good news is that there's enough there to do either.

Thanks for sharing this one. Neat car (and story).

My brother is the kind of guy that never throws anything away so it was quite possible.  That being said the tranny is not original although it is a correct M20 as the original was blown before he ever owned it. I may have pirated the original Muncie shifter stick as well so he had to dig into his  stash of stuff he has accumulated to put it back together.  The rest including the 1965 only exhaust manifolds and the non bowtie chromed valve covers are are all from the car. He's done some work on it just lately and has put it the carpet back in and put together the correct wheels with the 1965 Custom Sport wheel covers so it looks a bit more presentable.

Pretty much 100% certainty that the answer is no. There's been a number of claims of original cars but all the claims have fizzled out.

Super cool car. Most entertaining family history. The patina suits the car well.

...agree with you Carl......started at York Mills Pontiac in Toronto in Sept. 1964 as an apprentice and being 18 years old

and into all things hi-performance I do not recall any mention of the 396 being offered in Canadian Pontiacs. We had several 65

409 customer cars including the 65 CS 409 4 speed belonging to Rene Lediard from Georegtown, On  (I helped do the PDI on that car)

and a street racing 65 Strato-Chief 409-400hp that I helped change out a broken axle (on warranty)......fun times

Hard enough getting a 409! A couple of early 60s 409 imported chevs have come up and the price was astronomical! I have seen One 409 motor pop up and likewise!

Wow...what a car! If any car deserves to be the 'car feature of the month' this one does.

Prefect feature car ,  this is exactly what this hobby is all about !

And ,  I'd leave it just the way it is .. bolt on the best pieces , the car has way more personality.

Enjoy !
