A 72 400 4-barrel is a big valve 400. They can rev unlike a 455. 12-bolt rear behind a 400 is an Oshawa thing. It would have had fender skirts on it.

Was the 140mph speedo standard as well as the dual exhaust? Pascal, do you have the GM Docs?

I can't remember concerning the speedo, but 2 types of dual exhausts were available on the 72 LeMans. First there was a quiet dual system with discrete turn downs under the rear valence, and the GTO / GT dual performance system that was a little louder. That one had side splitters behind the rear wheels that pointed out and rearward. Since the notched rear pan was history for 72, you could add or take away the splitters at will (good luck finding a proper set).

Here's a 72 Luxury LeMans coupe with the side splitters. The pic is from a Petersen's Bodywork & Paint book circa 1973.

My Dad's  '70 Tempest out of Oshawa had 140 mph speedometer.

I won't bore you with my tale of the Nassau Blue 72 400 Luxury Lemans that let go for $900.

Engine HP should be 250, 140 MPH gauge is original to the car, never been modified, drivetrain same as GTO.

I like this car. Would the D99 be specified for the vinyl top? I don't see the vinyl top (C08) listed on the build sheet. Could this have been a two tone car originally?

Todd, see the b&w picture I posted earlier of the Luxury LeMans with the splitters & all the body parts named? It has the D99 moldings without either 2-tone or vinyl roof cover. I would have said that it was standard (maybe it was on coupes). A neighbor of mine owned a 72 Luxury LeMans 4-door hardtop from 1972 - 79. It did not have the D99 moldings and it looked cleaner without them (or the 2-tone or vinyl top).

Funny story about the neighbor with the 72 Luxury LeMans. 2 next door neighbors both became widows in 1970. Both remarried in 1972 and remained in their respective houses. The one woman, now Mrs. Grant, had a bunch of bad stuff happen right after getting married. First was the chimney fire. Next her husband's Mercedes 280S rolled into the garage door. Then Mrs. Grant got a brand new 72 Mustang Sportsroof but only kept it 1 week before tiring of the poor fastback rear visibility despite the 4' tall rear window. She brought it back to the dealer and took a new 72 Mustang Grandé coupe instead. She had it maybe a week or 2 before it was destroyed in a collision and written off. Unhurt, she and her new husband set off for a Pontiac dealer. He traded his 69 Mercedes in for a new 72 Grand Prix (silver with black top & interior); Mrs got a new 72 Luxury LeMans hardtop sedan in Wilderness Green (dark green). As soon as the cars got home, the LeMans had the sport wheelcovers from the new Mustang put in place. There was clearance for the fender skirts and looked great on the car. She kept that car (in great condition) until 1979 when she gave it to her daughter and replaced it with a new 79 Parisienne coupe.

Are these the wheel covers used on Mrs. Grants LeMans?

Ray, her Grandé had optional sport wheel covers, which I will try to depict below (they looked better in person; deep like the 70 mach 1 style, yet they fit on the LeMans)

First she had a yellow Sportsroof with wheel covers & whitewalls. I can't remember now if it had the racing mirrors or not.

temp Sporsroof.jpg

Her next Mustang looked like the one below, green, vinyl roof and everything. I hacked in some of those wheel covers to try to depict what it looked like:

1972_00061_08m.jpg

For reference you can see that the wheel covers look deep on the blue 70 mach 1 below:

70 Mach 1.jpg

Sorry about the thread hijack with all this Mustang stuff. Back to the LeMans.

The Luxury LeMans she ended up with wore the same wheel covers as the blue mach 1 above. Her car did have disk brakes so I guess the wheels were 14x6; tires would have been F or G78-14.

I found a picture of an E-code Quezal Gold Luxury LeMans hardtop coupe. Missing from the car are the rear fender skirts with the molding that ran across them; owner likely left them off because of the wider wheels. No D99 present either. I just noticed that it has the regular LeMans twin loop grille instead of the correct one on the Kijiji car that started this thread.

Also, did anyone notice that the Kijiji car has factory rear should belts? Look in the trunk pic.

I wonder why the rear shoulder belts aren't on the GM Docs?
