'64 Custom Sport tilt steering issue


Hi CP members,

I require some assistance in resolving a problem with my signal lights on a factory tilt steering column I purchased from a fellow CP member three or four years ago.  I love the tilt but have never been able to get the signal lights to work properly.  The right signal does not fully engage when I push the signal light lever up.  The left signal engages, but neither side will cancel.  I have purchased a new cancelling cam, a new switch which is located below the dash on the column, and a new cable which runs from the switch up through the tilt.  When I went to install these new parts, I discovered more issues.  If you look at the picture, one can see the difference between Number 1 and Number 2 in that there is a piece broken off in Number 2.  Number 3 is pointing to a plastic ball that should fit into a socket behind that center pin.  Number 4 points to a plastic "tit" to which the cable coming up the column mounts.  Admittedly, I am afraid to take the snap ring off to examine things further in case everything comes flying out at me.  Does anyone know where these additional parts could be purchased or of someone who is able to repair the signal light mechanism?  The tilt part of the column works perfectly.  I am aware that parts for a non-tilt column and different from these internal parts of a tilt column.  I also realize that parts for an Impala would fit too.  Do you suppose these tilt columns contained the same signal light system for more than one year, and if so, what years?IMG_4439_LI (2).jpg  Thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to read this thread and to respond to it.  I know that I do have other options.  I could put my original column which works just fine back in or even purchase an after market tilt that would fit.  My preference is to repair this tilt column.

Having some experience with similar issues, but on a 65 tilt, it sounds like the problem may be in the switch adjustment below the column since the internals in your pic look to be fine.

It may be the signal switch below the dash bottoming out too soon and not allowing connection or the spring clip (left of your #3 in pic) to seat on the cam. That cam is what locks the lever in either up or down (green circle)  The cancelling is done by hitting the areas in the red circles

Try putting the signals on when the tilt is in different positions (up & down). It will be a contact problem, if the signals work in some positions but not in others. This happens with the ignition switch on some tilt column cars.

I don't much about these tilt columns but you mentioned you got a new cancel cam. Did they give you the one for tilt or not? I believe they are not the same.

Years ago I had a 57 Chevy, and had some turn signal issues. I got them working, but the signal lights wouldn't cancel. I finally found that I had to bend the tangs of the cancel cam a bit so they hit the tabs circled in red.

Yes, I to have the correct canceling cam, the correct switch, and the correct cable for a tilt wheel. If you look carefully in my first picture at Number 1 and Number 2, you can see that there is a metal tab broken off on Number 2. This tab is a crucial part to the operation I am sure. Also, if you look carefully at Number 3 and Number 4 of my original picture, you can see that whitish plastic "stud" or "tit" and also by Number 3 a round plastic ball which has slipped out of place. I am positive that this ball should fit into some kind of socket behind the center post which Steve has circled in green. By the way, thank you Steve and Darryl; your observations are accurate. I have tried the signals in all tilt positions but they do not lock into place nor cancel. In my latest picture, circled in yellow, you can see the part that I am hoping to find. It is a one piece part that must include the missing part located by Number 2 in my original picture. I have read extensively on other forms and have found many owners with similar and even identical problems but the word out there is that no one makes any replacement parts other than the cam, switch, and cable. Please keep the suggestions coming.

On my 64cs with tilt the lower steering column has the turn signal workings. The Boden cable runs inside the column down to this switch for different tilt angles. Do you have this because this is where you adjust for left and right cancelling.

Yes. Brian. My tilt is identical to yours with the switch located on the lower tube of the column. I currently have the cable disconnected at the switch and, as you can see by my first picture, the cable is disconnected from the plastic stud at the top of the column. As mentioned, notice the ball shaped plastic which has sprung out from behind. Even with both ends of the cable disconnected, I am unable to push the lever to lock in the Up position. The problem is not with my switch even though I have purchased a new one. I am acutely aware of how difficult it is to adjust this switch so that the signals work properly. Thanks, Pierre, for the schematics. You are 100% right. The part that I need is indeed #9 in the diagram, the yoke assembly, tilt steering directional assembly. Again, notice in my first picture that there is a part broken off in Number 2 if you compare it to Number 1.
Thanks very much for the continued support on this topic. I could not find any old threads with this problem, and I really appreciate the feed back.
