Duty on car parts???

Just got my carb kit in from the US and they charged me duty 13.2% on it. I was bringing parts back for years from our winter get away and only ever paid GST what's with the duty now?  And to ask questions you get in to an automated loop with no one to ask why or an option to deal with this issue?

For curiosity sake, what is the kit for... we are having a discussion on buying local, Canada vs the US.... I will find the exact thing just to compare the difference...

If the origin of the part is off shore it is usually subject to duty.  In most cases automotive parts made in the US, Mexico, or  Canada are duty exempt  (NAFTA).  Quite often this is over looked but I understand they are paying more attention to this fact. When we were importing we had to pay duty on China, India, etc parts.

Dale @ NOS

All parts imported thru a broker will have the required duties (if any) and taxes applied. It's the law

Classic Ind shipping receipts always showed county of origin of each item

I've bought a lot of parts from Summit, Classic Ind and Detroit Speed to name a few and the only time I paid duty was when I had Summit deliver to my door.

I normally consolidate orders and pick them up stateside to clear them myself. I always take the invoice that was emailed to me to pay taxes. They have never asked or checked for packing slips which itemize countries of origin.

When asked what I am bring in, I respond "car parts". The only other thing they always ask is whether I'm bringing in parts for anyone other than myself and occasionally what car it is. As long as all invoices are in my name they have never questioned it.

I expect I'll get trumped one day, but so far - so good.

Re your carb kit, does it say somewhere on it where it was manufactured?

As NOS indicates, NAFTA only covers Canada, US & Mexico. If the parts were manufactured elsewhere then duty applies.

A few years ago I bought some Michelin tires for my Honda through TireRack.com and had them shipped to Montana. I picked them up, and when coming through the border they asked me where they were made. I said I presumed the USA, but they came out and checked and they had Made in France right on them. GST + Duty payable.

A buddy buys a lot of stuff from Summit (same thing, he has them shipped to Montana and picks them up), he says they always indicate where the items were manufactured on his packing list.

I never open the packing slips until I get back home with my stuff because I know what's supposed to be in the order and open boxes just to be sure everything is there. There have been parts from Taiwan, Korea, China, Japan - the minority is North American. I never gave it a second thought until previous threads on this subject pointed it out. They have never come outside to go through my order or questioned me beyond value of merchandise. I have come through there with the back of my truck full of sheet metal, motor parts, trim parts, wheels and tires.

Must have an honest face I guess. I learned a long time ago to remove sunglasses, exchange pleasantries and answer questions  directly without elaborating or bantering nervously like I'm hiding something. Answering Yes or No and providing an exact total value of goods, excluding shipping, in US dollars per my invoice has always served me well. I've never paid tax on shipping, just merchandise.

67Poucho the carb is for my 54 Pathfinder 239 L6 Carter 2010s landed at my door for $103cdn duty included. I found out yesterday that I can get same carb kit here locally for about the same. Carb kit does say made in USA. Shipped USPS/ Canada post.
Well I have brought in or had shipped in over $5000 worth of car parts from the states and never paid any duty unless like mentioned it didn't have place of laden bill with it from over seas pieces.
I do realise that any duty and GST is my responsibility not the shippers but what gets me more than anything is that the number they give for inquires is automated and no help at all. If I have to pay I'll pay but make me understand why. Just frustrated with getting taxed up the kazoo!!

Good thing the carb kit is made in the USA. The kits made off shore are supposed to be ethanol friendly but the accelerator pump rubber is junk and does not last. I bought carbs kits for 1 barrel BC Rochester carbs and they were $30 US delivered to my US address. Add 40% on the dollar at the time would have made it $42 Can. I have bought lots of parts from Summit, National Parts Depot, and CARS in Michigian and have never had to pay any duty just HST. The invoice from CARS was even stamped "Duty Exempt"

Like everybody else on here I will not buy anything shipped UPS.

if it does not say made in the usa they will often ding you, even sometimes if it does. There is a form you can fill out and get your money back if it is indeed a made in the usa product and you can prove it.Don't feel bad I ordered a 20.00 piece of trim for my 49 Pontiac from national chevy last week, charged me 55.00 to ship it!!!

Well I need to pull my horns in a bit. After I reread the bill it actually states in small print that it is for "handling" and the GST. So I guess they don't go thru this stuff at the border for free and I get that, so my bad it wasn't duty after all which is a good thing!

If I recall, Canada Post charges $10 for brokerage fees, plus GST. Is the handling fee you're referring to $10?

That's what I pay here too with Canada Post. In my books they are far and wide the best way to get stuff whenever possible.

I still can't figure out how you figured you were charged 13.2% duty without looking at the bill.

I thought his post above meant that the 13.2% is for handling and GST? Or did I read his last post wrong?

The 13.2% was the $9.95 handling charge which I thought was the duty. I was told by Canada Post that this extra charge was not theirs as the handling charges are added by seller when the product is purchased and they told me it was Customs who add the charge which CP retrieves from the buyer.

I hope this explains it better.
