605 PS box

I got a 605 P/S Box and am hoping to install it in my 60 Safari.  Is there anything special I need to know?  The car is manual steering right now, and got the box/pump for free and hoping it'll bolt in, so to speak...

Not familiar with the early 60's cars but I believe your 60 does not have a collapsible steering column. If that is the case the center shaft goes from steering wheel all the way into the steering box. I've modified a couple 605 boxes for 57's but unfortunately I can't comment any further on a 60. Hopefully someone in the know pipes up.

you probable need an adapter to bolt to frame, your pitmen arm should fit 605 box, will need ujoint and some shaft 3/4" diameter--36 spline I think to couple steer box to bottom of column. May have shaft but not sure of length, did a 500 series into 62 Parisienne , have an adapter left over but un sure of fitment. When you have all the right parts it bolts in. Laurie

It eliminates the Ram, & multiple hoses [read leaks] quicker Ratio too I believe!!  My 64 Long roof was converted to that set up previously nice clean set up & yes a adapter bracket is required!!!

Was that you on ChevyTalk asking this question? Answer below that I thought was good.

If you are talking about one of these:

www.borgeson.com/xcart/product.php...

It is a rebuilt Delphi box. Recommend you down load the installation instruction. There's a required parts list. Also, the 'recommended' + 3-4 degrees of caster is required. One can not get that much caster with the stock stamped upper control arms.

I highly recommended a front sway bar too. It will help reduce the 'roll' induced steering instability. The 14:1 steering ratio and the hydraulic pressure magnifies that 'instability'.

You know what you are talking about. I switched my 63 back to stock due to the instability of the 605, I have the stock upper control arms.

I don't think my car will "roll" much, its so low that it'll scrape before it rolls....

There is no bracket, just a spacer type thing between the box and the frames.

I found the 605 on my 63 was way too sensitive and downright dangerous, the way it was set up on my car. I had a wheel alignment done, it didn't help a lot. I couldn't ever take my hands off the wheel and really didn't feel comfortable driving with one hand on the wheel. It drove like an old bias ply tire car on a bad road, it would jump around.

I had a stock PS setup and had one before on the 59 that I liked, so I put that on my 63.

The 605 can work good from what I read, but you can have some "growing pains".
