This is the nicest one I have seen. I do have a question about these. The one on my car is white where the black is on this one. I have two extra ones that are both white. How was it determines which color GM used on a specific car?

The GM parts catalogue always showed the white letters on the tail panel mldg. for the 738 cars only. The 735and 736 cars had the black letters.

My SD has black letters and the fins behind the letters is white. The two extra ones I have are the same. Are you saying this is not correct for a 68 SD? The picture below is my tail panel,

James

My 68 Custom has one exactly like your James, while my 68 SD has one the same as the one listed for sale in this thread. Maybe production line changes ?

The tail panel color may have something to do with the car paint color.

It all depended on what color vinyl top you had black tops got black back ground with white letters.  White tops got white background with black letters for SD cars only same went for convert tops.  All Customs got argent back ground with black letters.

GM used similar reasoning with the rear trim on 65 Impala SS's.

Also the side trim on the SD color matches the rear panel

Was the same for the 69 beaumont black or white tail panel for the sd cars and argent for the custom.
