Fuel tank - how to restore?

There's abundant info on how to restore the inside of a fuel tank, and the various seal coatings available and so on, but I'm curious about the outside.  How does one get it back to bare "galvanized" appearance?

Unless there are good reproductions available (not that I know of, only for the wagon), looks like I'm restoring a rusty one!  Good news is I'm sure it's been empty and dry for 20 years.

You're either a genius or going to have a good laugh when I'm out in the shop scrubbing a 50-year-old rusty fuel tank with my wife's Kraft vinegar!

Honestly, I wouldn't spend a minute or a nickel on an old tank. The repro tanks from Spectra Premium Industries are identical, fit great and affordable.

Yes.

I have a new one ('64 Impala) installed in my car.

I too would prefer a new one, but didn't know about Spectra. I looked for tanks and actually came up empty, so thanks for the heads-up!

As a side-project I'm also trying to buy as much of this build as I can on Amazon, and they actually list the GM53B tank from Spectra for $282.

I have found one of the best places to buy a Spectra tank is Auto City Glass in Minnesota. Last time I bought one they were the cheapest place online for that tank.

The nice part is the Canadian made bit. We don't have to worry about it being offshore junk.

.....you're right Carl (also Show Cars in Minnesota) but I can't understand how a Canadian made tank is cheaper in the US than here

I bought two Spectra tanks from my supplier and when he told me this I asked if we could get Spectra to

just drop it off on the way to the States.........hmmmm -  guess not...cry

I bought one for a 66 Pontiac from Car Quest .  It was beautiful and 200 more than E-Bay .   I was trading my hours on it so I bit the bullet

I would only buy from Amazon, if they became the only company left in the world .

Every time I had used them my Credit card cancelled and was replaced by CIBC (thank goodness)

Then they sucked me into a Prime account and beat me for over 400.00 .

Never again

I never ever ever had a minutes trouble with E-Bay

I had a lengthy discussion with a sales rep from Spectra at a trade show a few years back.

We have a supplier where buy most of our jobber parts at the dealership I'm employed at. We spend well over $100,000 year there. I asked him how it was possible that if I bought the tank through my parts supplier at our dealership, our cost was $XXX. If I bought it online as a retail customer out of the USA, got it shipped to the North Dakota border, drove 25 miles each way to pick it up, came through customs and paid all applicable fees, even after I calculated US exchange, my cost to go to the border etc, a tank that cost a bit over $200 here was $80 cheaper Canadian if I bought it from the US as a retail customer.

I had to pressure him quite a while until he finally told me that they have a healthy discount program for the US restoration shops if they buy a semi load of tanks.

Check the price on a Spectra tank from a local radiator and gas tank repair shop. Our local rad shop was the cheapest place to buy the tank when I bought a new one for my 55 pontiac station wagon . It was $250 tax in and recieved in 4 days. Apparemtly the rad shops get wholesale prices from Spectra and get the best prices.

Greetings to all. Resurrecting this thread. Will require tank for 59-7519 sooner than later. Living with it for now as I work through other things. Have two clear in line filters in series behind auxiliary electric pump and keep an eye on them. Had never heard of Auto City Classics. Neat stuff, thank you. They have this listed for my car and I wonder if it would be overkill? I dont see it listed anywhere else. Many thanks. RGM (iPad wont let me insert)

Totally agree.  When I was using a vintage tank I had nothing but trouble with the fuel system.  Since I put in the Spectra I have never had to touch it.
