Hey gents, I will be needing body work and paint for my '67 Beaumont. Metal is done. Does anyone know of a good shop in or around Saskatoon for this work? I am not looking for show car quality, I do want excellent driver quality. Also, this being my first go around with car restoration, my big question is what all should be removed for paint? All chrome for sure. All glass? Dash? Whole interior?
Thanks again in advance. The knowledge and participation here is great!!!
My '66 was repainted in Saskatoon, but it was two owners before me, and well over 20 years ago and I don't know who actually sprayed it. Whoever did it did a great job - the paint is starting to show its age, but still looks good (IMHO). The only downside is it is not the stock Aztec Bronze (close, depending on the light, but definitely not an exact match) and I do not have the paint code so getting a couple touch-ups fixed means potentially trying to match the paint by trial & error. No one I talked to seems to trust the computer matching system (funny - a few years ago I was told by several shops that computer matching was spot-on). Key point, make sure you get the paint code and maybe a little extra paint for touch ups regardless of what colour you use.
Anyway - I would think that how much you strip off depends on what you're doing. Are you repainting the same colour? If you're changing colour, I would think you'd want EVERYTHING stripped so they can spray door jams, firewall, inside trunk, window gutters, dash etc. If you're keeping the same colour and paint on the dash, door jams, trunk etc are all good, you could get by with less prep.
My gut tells me that for "excellent quality driver", you'll be unhappy unless you strip it completely. Just my 2˘ - and I am definitely NOT a painter.

If you are going with 1 of 3 possible colours . you will want to strip it pretty bare . here is a photo of my Monte Carlo "as" I was stripping it
I can't say who is good for body shops but anyway you slice it the labour is expensive. The Draggins car show is coming up in April, it would be a good place to research who does good work based on what you see there. I find in general the paint and finish of Saskatoon area built cars is better than those from Regina. (I'm in Regina).
Do you have a budget to spend? From my experience in really rough numbers, $5000 doing it all yourself, $10,000 if you can find a shop willing to finish block and spray over your work, $20,000+ if it's being completely done by the shop. Keep in mind the shop labour rate is probably around $100/hr so it doesn't take long to burn through a budget.
I can't afford to pay someone else to do the work so I can and do most of my own work.
Thanks Eric. I see in your list of cars you have done a '69 GTO. I have one of those right now with the body off the frame. Do you have any pics of yours? Do you do all your work yourself? Including body work and paint?

My 69 GTO, is still in project stage. I have what some call AADD, automotive attention deficit disorder. The following is a link to a thread on here for how far I got on the goat until I shifted gears to work on something else.
I see what you mean Eric, that goat was a smokin deal but will keep you busy for some time to come. Thanks for sharing. Must be something about GTO's, attached are a couple of pics of mine before my brother decided to sell me his '67 Beaumont.
Strip all the chrome, emblems, trim and seals..... I'd leave the glass and dash in if there isn't anything wrong with them.
Then If I were you i'g go buy a decent orbital sander and strip all the exterior paint. (I don't think any shop would paint over 50 year old paint anymore) and if it's good bare metal the paint manufacturer will warranty the new paint job. Sanding it all off yourself will save you a fortune and it's pretty hard to screw up.
From there I would look over pretty much every inch of the car and fix any imperfections... like rust / dents. Take your time on this part...
Then take it to a bodyshop and let them give it a once over, Get them to spray the whole thing with high build primer and either let them block it out or tow it back home and do it yourself.
Not a body man..just a back yarder. But as stated I'd strip the whole car down. You'd be amazed at whats behind the paint, even if stock paint. Just stripped my sons 4dr right down to bare steel(orig paint) and a little bump in the paint turns into a rust hole! At least this way you know what your starting with and nothing will come back to haunt you. May take a while but worth it in the end. What tools do you have for sanding? 3" cup wire wheel works wonders for all those inside grooves and wont remove any metal.
I just got my 72 Nova back from bodywork and paint. I disassembled and stripped the whole car. I changed colour so everything came apart. It went to paint with no glass, trim, interior, engine, front inner fenders, grill, well, pretty much bare.
Its sitting in my shop with no doors, front clip including rad cradle waiting for reassembly with all pieces painted.
Big job, but it will be better than new when done!

Mike , that looks like a great paint job. I would love to see more pics as you go!
Thanks, Im really happy with the bodywork by a friend and the paint turned out great.
I ve been taking pictures as the work progresses and hope to assemble a thread to share with everyone when the car is near completion. Starting it now could lead to a long tedious thread. It really belongs on the Nova Site, but I think if I create it for there Ill copy it to here as well. From my experience with researching my project I found others build threads were extremely helpful, both for the Nova and Beaumont.
So, more to come!
