hi 50s pontiac peeps. We know the later canadian pontiacs are chev based, including ones shipped around the world from Canada. Are the 50s ponchos chev or pontiac based for canada? or are they the same whether US or canadian?

I'm not sure what they exported but both were built in Canada. The US models were limited & I belive may have been the Chieftain ?? I need someones else help on this.
All the Pontiacs built in Canada in the 50's were Chevrolet based. 1949- 54 received the Pontiac 239 flat head six while the Chevrolet used the overhead valve 216.5 or 235 six cylinder. Starting in 1955 the Canadian Pontiacs used the 261 six cylinder as the base engine with the 265 V8 as an option. All frames and suspension components were Chevrolet.
I'm not 100% certain but I think that both Canadian & U.S. Pontiacs were exported, but when it came to RHD export cars they went with the Canadian cars.

my experience is that yes all Canadian Pontiacs are chevy based rather than u.s Pontiac based. That being said you were able to order a u.s spec chieftain and have it built in Oshawa.I recently ran across one at a buddies who I buy Pontiac parts off occasionally. It had u.s sheetmetal, humps on the rear fenders like a u.s chieftain, underhood sheetmetal like a u.s chieftain, running the straight 8 with a automatic hydromatic transmission.I took a pic of the vin plate.
That is correct. I once owned a 1952 Pontiac which had the American body with a straight eight engine and standard transmission which was built in Oshawa. One of the nicest cars I ever owned. Wish I still had it!! Bob.
