This was a recent post from the hemmings blog - in addition to the article the reader comments are also interesting

I would hazard a guess that this vintage of truck is a pretty popular regular driver for many members of this forum

What about the '99's aren't they the same?? Mine looks the same anyway, bought brand new, was saying to my son that maybe I should restore it rather than buy another old car.

assuming we have the fuel to run them, im thinking of electric, my 76 is still a workhorse not a collectible, and that holds true with my 62 once its finished

In my opinion these are the absolute best trucks GM ever built especially the 1996 and up 5.7 vortec engines. Good fuel economy lots of power and all the creature comforts you would ever need. I look for these trucks all winter while in Florida and good ones are hard to find.  Regular cab short box fully loaded 2 or 4 wheel drive ae already at a premium price. The best looking truck ever!

I agree, I think the 97 we have now is likely my most favourite pickup of all the ones I've owned (even though it had the diff apart today to get all new side bearings, pinion bearings and axle seals...) One of the diff side bearings was pretty much shredded. It had been making a bad noise for a number of weeks already.

Think the Burb's and crew cabs kept the old body until 2000,thinking even the 3500 model. Someone can correct me if wrong...just going from memory which aint that great!

I actually had an old time mechanic arguing with me tonight that he thought the engine in my Suburban was bad and it should have been a 454, the 350 is just too weak he was saying. I told him he was an idiot.

Gotcha, here's a 1999 GMC Sierra. So Hemmings article needs a footnote regarding Suburban and one tons.

Pretty sure only the 1500s changed style in 99, the heavier models in 2000.....I love my 97. Bit of a pig on gas though.....lol

Yes, the 99 pickups came in both styles.

The weakest point in these was trucks was definitely the 10 bolt "time bomb". I parted at least a dozen of these trucks over the years and the diffs always sold quickly as the young kids blew them up while out mudding. The second bad point was the intake gaskets on the 1996 and up vortec engines. Felpro makes an excellent replacement. I still have a few good transfer cases both manual and electric. I cleared the back yard of the carcases of the 6 trucks I had this summer because the price of steel is good. The cure for the diff problem for heavy duty use is to find a 14 bolt cover that has 6 studs, as it was an option for heavy duty use.

youre still not convincing me that the new trucks are better ,yes the older units are harder on fuel 6.6 were never known for high mileage , but the work they do is impressive, for the record the new ls 6.2 are worse, older trucks are still trucks like they are suppose to be, rough. 017 (3).jpg

The weak points in my 2006; GM-made intermediate steering shafts and wheel bearings. furious I bought aftermarket and haven't had a problem since!

I remember being a big 454 SS & W/T 1500 fan. The W/T 1500 was a 90s version of a stripped truck. They were US only until about 1992.

GM would roll out a new generation of truck but kept some of the fringe models on the old platform. Remember the 1988 (March '87 intro) 1500-2500-3500 being sold alongside the previous generation Suburbans, Blazers, Crew Cabs & straight rail chassis-cabs through 1990 (R & V series trucks vs. C & K series trucks). C50 - C70 Mediums changed for 1990. I still have the brochures from Robertson (Old Reliable) on the Danforth, & Herron in Mississauga.

sold my 90 last summer. But I sure wish I had my 81 box though....the 90 was nicer, had AC etc but....the 81 to me was more appealing to me. Maybe one day ill have another.
