Proposal to rollback EPA emission requirements.

"A proposed a major environmental rollback on Thursday, announcing that-

starting in 2020-it will no longer require cars and trucks to become more fuel efficient every year.

Under the new proposal, automakers would only have to produce cars that achieve a

real-world average of about 29 miles a gallon from 2021 to 2025.

Far more significantly, the Environmental Protection Agency has also said it

will revoke California's waiver to operate its Zero Emission Vehicle program,

which encourages the purchase of electric and hydrogen vehicles by local residents and businesses.

The proposal, which is now open for public comment, could still be revised before it is finalized in several months."

Car emissions have been really cleaned up, and fuel efficiency has really improved relative to performance. The easy (& more difficult) conquests have already been made. Now the lawmakers perhaps are realizing that pulling random numbers out of the air is entirely unscientific and based on emotion.

Electric cars have their place, but the draconian & impossible-to-meet fuel and emission standards that will effectively ban the internal combustion engine are hedged with optimism but are also pure fantasy. Battery efficiency plummets a cold environment (does Canada get cold in winter? Gee I don't know). Is electricity cheap? Certainly not in Ontario, in fact some of the highest rates around are here.

The EPA had a mandate, but they have become too big and powerful for an un-elected agency that affects everyone. Time for a little levity for a change.

I would like to say something else about Ontario but it will become political. That never ends well. censored.gif

What Cam said and last time i checked our hydro mostly comes from nuclear power plants in Ontario. Lets see a show of hands how many folks want MORE of those facilities in Ontario. Yea just what i thought............... no one wants any more of those cropping up anywhere. The whole topic has become a joke because there are no  easy answers and no real cheap answers as well. Like Cam said i will keep politics out of this whole mess.

Doesnt matter what this law is, the rest of the world will be producing cars with lower fuel consumption and emissions and selling them here. Well be building uncompetitive vehicles like in 1973 and the public will buy them.

Being a bit of a geek I love the technology behind electric cars but would only own one if I could afford to put up enough solar panels to charge it. That's the only way it really makes sense to me OR if for example a province like where I live would invest in off shore wind turbines to generate electricity. That technology has improved greatly in the last 3 or so years. Britain gets a large chunk of their power from off shore turbines. It is now cost effective because of the huge amounts of electricity each turbine can now generate.

I just did a rant about diesels and electronics, but I agree with you on the whole solar plug in system, and its not because im a greeny. our system is based on cost and profit , when my profit goes down and my power goes up 150 present , then I have to lower my costs solar is a cheaper alternative which now pays for itself.a fully electric car works for the summer when you drive the most, cost pennies on fuel and maintence. its a no brainer. and I still feel good about driving  a big V8
