BC Wildfire Smoke...in PEI.

Incredibly hazy here today. This photo was taken around 7pm. Normally this would have been a bright blue sky.

Special air quality statement in effect for:

  • Queens County P.E.I.

A plume of smoke from fires in Western Canada is moving at high altitude across the Maritimes, causing hazy skies and a reddish sun. This smoke is not expected to reach the surface or affect air quality in our region. The smoke plume will move slowly off to the east tonight.

How are you west coast guys doing? I haven't seen much discussion about the wildfires on here.

Been pretty smoky down the south end of Vancouver Island all week. A little better today, but calling for more

the next couple of days. Not good for those with heart or Lung or Health issue's for that matter.

Couldn't see more than a few miles yesterday, Mountains would be there in morning and gone in afternoon.

Lots of flights were cancelled due to low smoke. Have heard that the interior of BC and northern BC got hit hard.

Around Jerels area and Way up North.

Alberta has been the big beneficiary of all the BC smoke. We've had days on end with the air quality at a 10+, light layers of ash on cars etc. The jet stream has finally changed and we got a little rain this morning which cleared everything up for now. It's been really bad here though. One stat I heard was the air was bad enough it was similar to smoking 8 or 9 cigarettes a day.

I'd say the smoke has ruined the summer here, making most of August terrible.

Today in NS started off as a nice sunny day, just before noon I noticed the sky looking hazy, but not cloudy.  Checked the satellite animation on Environment Canada's website and noticed the jet stream running directly west to east and then curling down over the maritimes.  Environment Canada was still predicting a sunny day so I sent them off a note about what appeared to be smoke over NS.  Within an hour or so they issued a weather statement about the smoke.  Coincidence? biggrin

Yeah it is amazing the volume of smoke the fires create to be right across the country. Friend of mine came from his cabin in Ontario this week and hit smoke in Dryden and had smoke the whole drive back here. Haven't seen much blue sky for a few weeks but I'm saving money as I haven't had to buy a pack of smokes for a month. Pretty tough for people with lung problems. Was in Spokane on the weekend and was smoke all the way there and back too. There was a thing on the news a couple days ago that there was a group in Spokane that were all going to set up fans today to blow the smoke back into Canada. I think it worked because we had a rare blue sky yesterday afternoon and evening.

Y a I heard about the guys in Spokane, LOL, was kinda funny. Also heard that Prince George was so smokey that at

2 in afternoon it looked like the middle of the night. People had to use floodlights to do outside work in the middle of the day.

Sooke has been covered for the past week. Today it has let up a bit. Normally we can see Sooke basin and East Sooke hills and we're 1500 feet away from the basin. Looked like fog rolling in but it was smoke!! For the guys that have been here...we couldn't see the water!!

Same conditions here again today. Luckily for us the smoke is so high up it won't affect our air quality. I feel bad for you guys out west. Hopefully this isn't the new norm but with scientists saying the next 5 years are going to be warmer than normal it may well be. I wouldn't be surprised if we start getting more fires here in the Maritimes as we are starting to get abnormally dry hot summers too. I live in an area of PEI with a lot of trees:

The sad part is that the smoke doesnt smell like a camp fire. It stinks like a garbage dump fire. Thankfully we live in a multinational neighbourhood and the East Indian and pacific rim families are already cooking, that smells good. : )

Yup, we just spent 8 days close to there at the cottage and it was hazy and smelly most days. I can hardly imagine how bad it must be out west if it's like that in NW Ontario.

LOL, no, no, it was all good.

We don't usually come home that way, usually turn a few miles before that but I was daydreaming and missed our exit!
