When you say Pinto's are HOT, i think you mean that when they are rear ended, they burst into flames and all the passengers are HOT. Ford chose not to put a metal shield between the rear axel and the body for cost reasons. Because of this a number of people died in an inferno when rear ended. Ford settled with many of these folks families because it was cheaper than retrofitting the many Pinto's with a $10.00 metal shield. Every time i look at a Pinto, i think of death and company negligence.

Funny thing George is the early Mustangs had an even deadlier gas tank design. The trunk floor was the gas tank. Still I can't imagine the Pinto being collectible but to each their own.
65 Camino- Hagerty reports that early (older than say 1989) Japanese cars are really hot right now.

I won't want to weld a new trunk floor in a Mustang any time soon then!

I used to "bumper hitch" regularly in winter behind a friend's parent's '75 Pinto Squire. Also skateboarded in summer behind it once up to 45 mph.no Ahhhhh to be young and fearless (dumb). Theirs was cream-coloured with "wood" on it.

Back in the 70's, there was a V8 Pinto in my home town. A straight line rocket. Of course it had the big 50 series rear ties and air shocks to the moon. Side pipes and sun roof too.

My sister had one of the Mercury equivalents. Can't even remember the model name now. Bobcat, wasn't it?

I am surprised any of the 'woodie' Pintos survived. I think they started rusting away on the dealer lot.

Carl, here is a photo of a 65 Mustang with the gas tank removed:

So, as you can in the next photo the gas tank is the trunk floor:

Zero protection in a rear end collision. Scary!

Anybody remember this episode of 60 minutes about the Mustang fuel tanks?  I saw it at the time and it forever changed my views on these cars.  Don't forget that this design was also shared with other Ford vehicles like Fairlane/Torino/Comet/Cyclone, Falcon, etc.

I do think that even without the fire the driver in the 60 Minutes episode would likely have been killed or seriously injured, but the idea of gas being able to freely flow into the passenger compartment is a scary thought to me.

Then there are all the old pickups with the gas tank just behind the seat... though I can't say I've ever heard of one of those exploding, I'm sure it's happened at least once.
