After 40 years, The Big Green Monster Dies

Made in Canada, Keeprite had the market in the 60s and 70s.

Reliability was the main selling point.

A legend in it's time, for never needing repaired.

Always had the capability to frost the windows up in seconds.

All the HVAC people just called them "The Big Green Monster"

Now internationally owned, they still use the name.

May 5, 1978 is the build tag on my unit.

The one thing this unit wasn't know for was saving power.

This unit alone, probably caused the 2003, North Eastern Black out !

The compressor unit has rusted out and leaked.

I don't think I can get parts for the old girl.

Scrap metal prices are up again, yeah !

Rest in pieces !

I bought one 30 years ago because it was the best at the time. Ran quiet too. Been gone from the old place over 5 years now but I bet its still running

You got your moneys worth for sure! We heat/cool our house with a large Fujitsu heat pump. We bought it because it has a 10 year parts/labour warranty. We are half way though the warranty period and that thing is running almost constantly. Not a problem yet.

My grandmothers just had to go last month. Unit was still going but a leak in the furnace meant a refill and they were not allowed to refill the old green beast

There are so many of these green monsters still in operation.  You see them everywhere still chugging along.  I purchased a house in 1994 with a green monster, replaced the compressor as it was not working and still operates today.  I no longer own the home but the green monster in that house continues in operation today!

That is funny because i was thinking the exact same thing. The same one that Hillar owned at one time.

I had the same Keepwright AC (1.5Ton), going strong for 24 years, until sold the property.

For new installs, i will likely spec out a RUUD at 13 SEER.
- ACHIEVER SERIES: SINGLE STAGE (RA13) www.ruud.com/product/ruud-condensing-units-achiever-series-single-stage-ra13/
- 16 SEER other brands, have to many computer boards & electronics / and unit cycles on & off, too often / and way more expensive

Had a 1.5 ton Keeprite as well. 1988 model. I McGivered it many times to keep it running. Gave up on it two years ago when we did a new York LX furnace and a 2 ton. I must say, as much as they tout the new ones as being quiet, that old Keeprite was pretty good. Strange, but I was actually sad to see it go.

I don't expect the new to last near as long as the old Clair Hecla teemed with that Keeprite.
