Chrome Vinyl Wrap as an Alternative to Plating?
Permalink Closed

Mark (MC) and I were discussing this 60 Pontiac that's for sale with the painted bumpers:

Mark wondered if a chrome wrap would be possible on such a car instead of expensive plating. It looks like it is possible as this video shows on a late model car. I bet a bumper like on this '60 would be much easier to do as you could unbolt it, wrap it and reinstall it. I'm sure the vinyl would be much cheaper than chroming. Now I wouldn't think of doing this on a rare car, it might be an alternative on a driver like this Pontiac.

Yeah, I had that idea a few months ago while driving by a business that does wraps.   Chrome plating has become so expensive I was wondering if this would be more cost effective for a driver, or at least until you saved up enough money for real chrome.  Mostly comes from the idea that I hate the painted bumper look and anything would be an improvement IMHO.

Thanks for taking this one public, Todd.  Would be interested to see what other members think.

And I'll add that I only think it would be cost effective, as I don't actually know how much that stuff costs.  Looks like it would be tricky to use, but I would be up for the challenge. smile

The Chrome Vinyl looks pretty inexpensive. 12" X 60" roll on eBay for $19.02 and the seller is in Canada
For under 20 bucks it'd be worth a try.

As someone who is in the business of wrapping vehicles, I can tell you what your results will be with cheap wrap vinyl. There really is no substitute for quality materials. Wrapping is also much harder than it looks. I would tackle it, but would do it on the car, and remove and install the bolts as I'm doing it, just to keep it firmly in place.

What would it cost to wrap say a 1960 Pontiac bumper with high quality vinyl?

I'm temped to test it on the lower part of the plastic grill so as to give it a more prominent chrome look. What happens if I don't like the result? Does anyone know how hard or easy it peels off??

here's a picture of chrome wrap on the hood piece of a 57 project car my nephew & I are doing. It is not as shiney as chrome but it matched up well with the driver-quality chrome on this car.
