After Hot Wheels my friends and I got into A/FX slot cars. Yes we did the modifications, with hopped up armatures, spun wheels, slicks etc.

I had both slot cars and Hotwheels/Matchbox/Corgi. My first AFX set had a 70 Camaro and a 70 Superbird. The motor in the Superbird somehow overheated and melted the body.

Mine melted as well, but usually resulting from the fire crackers...

lol. The Hotwheels cars were the ones that usually had a fiery death (or were parked behind the wheels of dads car..). I used to put dish soap on the AFX track to allow good burnouts though!

We used to put just a touch of Vaseline on the back tires of the Strombecker cars so they would spin more and the back end would swing out around the corners!

We took the transformers from the train set that used higher volts and hooked them up to the slot car tracks

I never checked the voltage but I know the newer Strombecker kits we got with the different transformer was not as fast at the original one from my kit that I bought about 1970.

Oh, I remember so clearly how I worked and saved up to have the 19.95 I needed to order that kit from Eatons. And I remember mom saying " Are you SURE you want to spend that much of your money on that race set? What if you don't use it much?" Ha, there was never any danger of it not getting used! My cousin and I would often spend most of a Saturday using and abusing it. I still have it. And this thread is giving me the itch to set it up in the basement again!

my Dad was always good with lending me the money to buy things cause he knew I would work to pay it off but wasn`t always sure what I was buying would get used. Mini bike was $145 and my first Snowmobile $677.25 both got hours and hours of use by the whole family

That's what I did with my Eldons. I still have my '60s nice/boxed Eldon set.

Darryl, it scares me how well you know me. Actually it was model cars that took over my car related passion, girls were one or two years after that.
