the Lowes is only 10 minutes from my house so I hope mine is not one of the stores closing. Does look like it will be mostly the Rona stores closing

Small town here, we have a Rona and a Home Hardware....I prefer the Rona. Small towns will miss their Ronas, thats where most of them are...in small towns

Seems in Ont that the Ronas closing are in the cities where there is probably also a Lowes....Good for the small towns......for now

Thats sad, because I've always found any Rona or Lowes to be a step above Home Depot. Rona in customer service, Lowes in a better product mix.

Are we again seeing the poor result of foreign ownership?

 funny you say this;
I have found Rona and Home Depot to be near dead ringers of each other;
I prefer to not support Rona for two reasons;
1) profits sent out east to PQ.
2) being in the truss industry, they have always been my employers competition - and their pricing is setup so that often they sell engineered wood products below market cost - which makes it hard to compete with them.

Lowes on the other hand seems a totally different company;
Where Rona & HD seem to be mostly for contractors, Lowes seems mostly for the home owner, with much of their marketing geared towards home owners doing their renos or buying their yard maintnenace appliances ect there...
Almost like a Home Depot meets a Sears... 
Lowes does have some areas for contractors, but it has a feel as though they are not geared towards contractors.

I grew up going with my dad to lumber yards like Revelstoke, Totem, ect - so the Home Depot type places seem more familiar to me.
I was very disappointed when a couple years ago Rona rebranded all the remaining Totem stores... now it's like there's a Rona of some sort around every corner.

wait a second - did Lowes buy Rona?

one of the Rona's listed in the link is in the next neighborhood over - it was a really unusual shop, like a little Home Hardware type store...

Lowes did buy Rona in Ontario, cant say about the other provinces. Lowes also sells Craftsman stuff now. I think the Stanley group now owns the Craftsman trademark.

One of the Rona's in winnipeg is being converted to a Lowes. I agree, Lowes is more home owner targeted, it's more upscale than HD or Rona. I really prefer HD over Rona, I just thought HD was cleaner, more organized, kept their lumber inside, better stocked, etc etc.

 My understanding is that Loews purchased RONA  completely a couple of years ago
