Pure Canadiana - Log Driver's Waltz picture book released

Was reading where the Log Driver's Waltz picture book was released in September in time for Christmas season. Amazon has it of course:

Log Driver's Waltz

Got to reminiscing about the little NFB vignette from the 70's and its really a nice little song and film so I've posted it here. Hope you enjoy seeing it again after all these years.

Thanks for posting that clip. I always get a bit choked when I watch it. My dad who would have been 119 years old yesterday was one of the last real old time stream drivers back in NB. I still can see him running across the logs leaving a rooster tail of water behind him. Guess he was part squirrel.

The old stream drivers are all gone now and the log drives just a memory but, I was lucky enough to work on several drives before they hung the last one on the Tobique River in Northern New Brunswick. Never could hold a candle to the real "Top-of-the-log" men but still have the memories .

Just like in the clip, the stream drivers were the glamour boys of the forest workers back then, what they refer to today as "Top Guns"!

As Bob hope sang, Thanks for the memories.

Fred

Thanks for posting..remember the days of skipping out of school(dads permission) to go to watch and hang out with my dad at work(logging road builder) and at the end of the day we went back to the yard(at the Ocean) and I watched the boom boats and log walkers(can't remember the West Coast name) was like they were walking on water...never saw one fall.. Have a pic of me on the biggest logging truck in the world (Butler Brothers) in that yard. Great memories of the booming logging era. Also with my bad memory...I remember the vid,,classic!

Spectacular would be one word to describe the behemoth Butler Brothers Mark V log hauler, fully loaded with pup, shown here in the mid-1970s.  Butler Brothers, who began their 29 years of logging in the Sooke/Otter area in 1946, gained a reputation for being innovative in their woods operations.

Wow! I wonder what the GVW was on that beast. Must have needed a really well built road to hold that up.

I heard the other day that there are some people who thought growing up that the Log Drivers waltz was Canada's national Anthem.

I was a big fan of Kate and Anna since their first album.  Kinda reminded me of my relatives singing in the parlour.

Always was a shame they essentially got no radio play in this country ever. (Didn't fit the format you see...)

By the way the guy who wrote this song (Wade Hemsworth) also wrote the Black Fly song.  You know the one....

Heres an NFB clip of him singing the song with the McGarrigles.

Good stuff. I enjoyed both of those videos. There's a lot of gems on the NFB website.
