just heard that CTV is reporting - this is terrible news!

The 2008 bailout is looking like a pretty crappy investment. I guess Trump will be happy...

Naw.....nobody named Bombardier there. This is terrible news for Oshawa and Ontario and just a continuation

of the same sh$t across Canada. Listening to the money people on Bloomberg and it's clear Canada is in a lot of trouble and

seen worldwide that you just can't get anything done here. Investment is in the tank.........cry

I can't imagine how many jobs it will affect indirectly besides the number mentioned who are are direct hit.

Sad. I grew up with a lot of GM-employed families and friends.

Very bad news.  I'm wondering if it's an offshoot of 'make America great again', or just part of a larger global plan for GM.  It may be that they just don't want to invest in the aging plant anymore and had planned to shut it down for some time.  Either way they should be paying back that $1 billion owed to our taxpayers... not like that's going to happen.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/gm-oshawa-plant-1.4920241

I was surprised to read that the plant had already suffered such a strong decline.  The number working there now is only a shadow of what it was 30 years ago.

"According to GM's website, the Oshawa Assembly Plant employs 2,522 workers with Unifor Local 222. Production began on Nov. 7, 1953. In the 1980s, the plant employed roughly 23,000 people."

Trudeau just gave LGBQT 450 grand so they are still squandering out TAX $!! Will be interesting to see what "Dougie" has to say after 10 am announcement from GM??? Spin off job lose will be likely "TRIPLE" that of the 3000 union workers at Plant!!!!!!

They say for one auto job there can be up to 5 jobs indirectly related to that single job.

This will really hurt Oshawa, and Ontario in general. But really, the plant seems to have been on borrowed time over the last, what? 20 years?

Its really about the 1% and the 99%, you can pay nothing outside Canada, USA, all in the name of a lower price (for some things, not autos) and huge profits.

You can ignore common sense environmental and safety rules, you can murder your opposition, etc., you can delete any healthcare benefits, you can make people work 100 hours a week, all to make Walmart, Apple, Amazon, etc. hugely profitable.

Someone keeps buying those 2019 Denali's for $80,000 plus so GM etc. keeps making that stuff. Because of the large number of jobs, the large businesses have a lot of power and they play one government against another, like Amazon just did. They all do it wherever they can whether it be BC, Alberta, SK, ON, PQ, or here in Atlantic. Its a take it or leave it kind of thing and if you are a worker at GM, Suncor, or Bombardier, you think it is a necessary evil.

When it comes to manufacturing anything, wages are now getting to be a much smaller slice of the cost pie, as time goes on the robots will make everything, automotion is taking over. A lot of those jobs from 53 disappeared to automation, as well as to Mexico and China. The jobs in Oshawa will likely not go to the US.

What's the solution, more government input with our money, or less? Depends where your backyard is I guess. This isn't about politics, we all get screwed by all politicians it seems. I'm an old cynic.

Had  to see this coming.......Oshawa had 23,000 GM employees at one time in history.

After 90 years in Windsor, GM pulled out a few years back. Over the years the numbers started to dwindle......

Bailouts over the years were only a stop gap for short period of time solution.....

Unfortunate that Canada never had investors who would invest in an actual Canadian  car.....

Every car built here has been built through foreign owned companies. Canadians rely too much on  foreigners to doing investing

in our country in most of what we manufacturer, and in our resource sector.

Sorry to see it go, Chrysler will be next.

Maybe the government can use the GM buildings to create housing for the irregulars coming over illegally from the US ?

We're starting to get political on this thread so I think it's time to shut it down. We can summarize it as being a terrible situation and we all feel for those affected.
