Storm Bound

The maritimes have been hit hard by this storm. 100k winds and heavy wet snow. Lots of trees and power poles down here in PEI. Our power went out at 5am. I have a feeling it will be like the storm around this time 2 years ago where we were 5 days without power. We have the woodstove to cook on and to stay warm. I'll fire up the generator later today and run the well for a few minutes to flush toilets and fill buckets (I don't like to run the well pump off the generator as the current from it isn't super clean and my controller is solid state). Here's the latest stats from Maritime Electric on power outages:

As of 9:45am AST, there are the following power outages across the Maritimes (scroll to see your province and details about the outages):

• Nova Scotia: 212,483 customers without power (to put into perspective, total amount of customers is about 500,000)

Nova Scotia Power is saying that the large amount of outages across the province are due to possible damage or interruptions to their main transmission lines/stations in Northeastern Nova Scotia (one of the hardest hit places from this weather system) and it is affecting their ability to deliver power to many regions.

Many regions in Halifax are looking to be without power until 4:00pm by current estimates.

————————————

• New Brunswick: 43,703 customers without power.

No current complications with outages across New Brunswick. Outages are due to high winds and heavy snow.

————————————

• Prince Edward Island: ~35,000 customers without power.

Currently, Maritime Electric is reporting no outages on their website, but as of 9am it is estimated that ~35,000 customers are without power across the island.

I just read PEI is up to 45000 without power (pretty much the whole island). Its really windy and snowing heavy.

I'm glad I updated my phone plan to 10g data/month. I suspect I'll be using a bit of it in the next few days!

Oh wow, stoke up the fire and settle in! Our couple of inches of snow that just kind of lazily settled in yesterday doesn't look so bad then.

We have rain and big wind. I live outside Mahone Bay town, they and much of the area are without power, knock on wood we still have electricity. The snow is missing us.

It's not so bad NOW up our way.

There is still a 50 km. wind (down from 100 kms.), but at least it's +1 C (-5 C wind chill) out, so not too bad. 4 cms, of wet snow.

Got the generator going, so all is well. About a 3 out 10 on the Nor-easter rating.smile

We've had power out all morning, just came back on about an hour ago. Still LOTS of outages showing up on the map, so I guess we got lucky.

Winds are still strong here (gusting to 80 km/h) but the temp stayed just above freezing last night so we just got about an inch of snow at the coast.  Much more inland and in the more northerly areas.

All is well. Plowed my lane, went to the widow's around the corner and wrestled with her generator. I won and now she has power. Got my generator going so I have a laptop, internet, fridge, freezer. Connie is cooking eggs, sausages and hashbrowns on the woodstove. Sound like we won't have power until tomorrow. The feed from NB is still down.

I'm going to run the generator until 9:00 or 10:00 tonight, then pack it in.

at one point long ago I had a mobile desktop publishing unit. 9 six volt batterys and an inverter. could run for couple of days. Need to fire up generator to recharge. would that be clean enough to run your well pump?

A well pump has a wicked surge, that why you have to shut off other major house power draws when running a generator.

Example of average well pump:

Well Pump 1/2 hp1000 (Running) 2100-4000 (Starting surge)

We have a 3/4 hp jet pump (our well is 127 feet deep) so it is even more of a surge. We have to be mindful when running the well.

Yep. My generator started leaking a lot of oil. Was shutting down every 2 hours (low oil switch). Appears the crank seal has let go. I've been topping up with 10W30 instead of 5W30 and it will run a little longer.

Still without electricity. Maritime Electric is saying it could be Sunday before we get power back. I'm limping my generator along. I've gone through almost 2 litres of oil....

That just adds to the hassles.no I'll have to dump my oil at lunch today.

I'm just running my generator 07:00 - noon and then 16:00 - to roughly 21:00. It is just me (my wife is in Palm Springs Cali. right now.evileye

I phoned Maritime last night (after a neighbour said it would be Monday for us to get back power) and the woman there (thankless job) said there is no way of really knowing when you will get power back. Meanwhile, everyone within 2 kms. of us has power!no

I feel your pain Darryl. We are still without power as well. I just called and she said "Your road is highlighted which is a good sign. That usually means they are trying to schedule a truck to your area". I hope so. I have a CPAP machine so I need to run the gennerator all night. I've put over 2.5 litres of oil in it so far and used $50 in fuel. It was the wind and heavy snow that did the damage. My boss said he drove by an area where 5 poles in a row were snapped and he said they looked pretty rotted. In their defense the utility has been replacing a lot of poles lately and cutting trees near the wires.

That sucks, Todd.  Hopefully they will get you and Darryl back on line sooner rather than later.

Our power came back on Thursday afternoon, but I see there are still a lot of outages in NS, mostly in the northern areas and Cape Breton.

It's true it didn't look like that bad of a storm from here, as it was mostly wind, but up north I understand they got a lot of wet snow.

I think our power was out more due to an issue with NS Power's main transmission lines:

Mine came on at noon today ... still hasn't beaten my 5-day power-out record.

The one saving grace was the slightly above zero temperatures.

Time to fix that seal ... we might need our generators this season.

It seems we get more and more bouts of freezing rain or heavy/wet snow than we did even 10 years ago. Ya right, climate change isn't happening.disbelief

Well our chickens are having what my wife calls a "heavy molt" right now (and no eggs because of this) and all her chicken owning friends are reporting the same thing. This could be a sign of the winter we are going to have. This damp crap isn't good for the joints.

I'm going to tear the generator apart tomorrow..
