Did it take the 407 to push for proper licence plates. No peeling, faded plates

Finally, someone has pushed the government of Ontario to replace unreadable plates.   Got the news in my current 407 billing.

If the plate is less than 5 years old it is no charge replacement.   After 5 years 59.00 Thank you.

Show up with both plates in hand and the registration, along with insurance and the plates will be replaced.

No mention of whether you get to keep your current plate number or the Persoanlized plate replacement.

I have seen some plates where they painted the numbers with a brush as the coating had disappeared and the plate simply faded beyond recognition.

What if you want to keep the same numbers?

What year did they go with the piece of garbage laminate coating?  If it was 5 years ago, then that may be the reason for the charge for older plates, i.e. the older plates are much better quality and thus don't likely need to be replaced.

They went with that same system here in NS a few years ago and same result - bubbling, peeling, flaking off.  On one of my cars, I'm still running a plate that I got back in 1993 and it's still in good shape.  So I'm thinking the laminate plates that they have now must be really cheap, but not so cheap if you take into account all the free replacements they will have to supply, not to mention the extra admin work to manage it.

I remember my last set of plates from Ontario (which are hanging in my garage) did the same thing.

Manitoba is also having the same problems with their license plates . I've already had to get one pair replaced this summer as you could not decipher the lettering . This was a plate that was 4-5 years old . My older plates are perfectly fine .

I had mine replaced free. Its an Ontario Highway Traffic Offence to have unreadable plates. Why people still have them I dunno.

The plates that I had on my camper from 2007 peeled also. I am not sure when the laminated coating started, but I know that this has been a problem for a long time.

Ontario went to not replacing plates every year in 1973. I remember that the 1st couple of years the blue letters would fade off, so it was all white. Us that were a bit rowdy loved that as the coppers couldn't read the numbers. Of course, in a small town they knew who we were anyways....lol
After that the plates were good until this laminated junk came out. It was more than 5 years ago, I am sure....more like 10-15

They went to these junknplates around 1996 or 1997. I remember getting them then and thinking they looked funny. We have since had all our old plates restored and dont bother with these new garbage plates ( glad we held on to our old plates. We still have two keep it beautiful sets on 2 of our cars

The laminate plates must be all made in the same place, same problem here in Newfoundland.

I wonder if they are made in NS? www.waldale.com/

Maybe go back to the good old days when they were made in prison.

Took my plates from Yukon to Lic office, start with B & they said they were replacing them no charge BUT when they saw mine they said NO they weren't "bad" enough??? Time limit on replacement so when mine are "bad" enough, they will be "OUT" of Warranty replacement??? SCREWED again by Government.

The plates I got in '89 were durable, the plates I got in 2002 didn't cause problems, but the ones I got in 2010 I replaced within the 5-year window. I even had a clear guard over the front, but the paint peeled off down to bare aluminum despite careful treatment. So far the replacements are just fine. Replacements were off-the-shelf numbers so you may be SOL if you want the same #s. A vanity plate might be able to be ordered but I'm sure you'd need to talk to Service Ontario for the lowdown.

When they get loose while in warranty, maybe stick them in the oven to finish them off or hit them with the pressure washer.
