It certainly comes from a time before cell phones - if something like that happened today with that many people gathered you can be sure one of the passerby's would be on their cell phone to the RCMP
The location is called 2nd bridge on the highway heading to Long Beach. We used to have some big parties out there in the 70's. The place we used to have more controlled racing was just down the road from there on the flats. We would have CB radios at both ends to stop the traffic, you should have seen the look on tourists faces when they went by and saw hundreds of kids standing by the road. I always wonder how my then cars would fare against my now car, I'm pretty sure that today's 68 Beaumont would eat them alive.
I am just dumbfounded by all this. As much as i love drag racing and love old cars of all sorts, being an A... H.... on the road and messing up other folks for ones own personal fun is not cool. If i was a cop i would have tried to round up every one of those A... H..... That dude that messed up his 67 Chevelle in the process......... well too bad for the car but good on you dumb ass. The stupidity just continues to amaze me. Nice cars though.

We used to do the same dumb stuff every weekend. Our main places for racing were Latimer road at it's south end, or Harvey road north of Fraser Highway, or my favorite, in Port Kells by the old Overwaitea warehouse. There were always boneheads like the dude with the Shovel.
We would generally hoon around Fraser highway in Langley. Cruise from A&W at the East end to McDonalds at the west end. We had a few places we'd congregate, then someone would suggest Harvey, Latimer, or Overwaitea and we'd be there until we got busted. I don't know anyone that got a ticker for street racing, all they'd usually do is block us all in and we'd have to talk to one of the RC before they'd let us go. Usually a small fix it ticket as a parting gift for all...
