Time in my favourite wrecking yard yesterday
Permalink Closed

I had a chance to run to Minnesota this weekend and we made a last minute decision to do it. I only got about 5 hours in the yard, and unfortunately also came down with some kind of cold/flu bug during the night at the motel. I didn't have a lot of energy in the morning but we had driven the 200 miles so I did the best I could with the time.

A few glimpses...

2 glass roof wagons, one Olds, one Buick

Don't know my Olds' very well, but a 59 or 60 2 door post with 3 on the tree! (You have to look carefully to see the pedals) Didn't know they made that combo in Olds.....

He has a Riviera with a Strato Bench with headrests. The windows are up, doors are locked and he will NOT sell me that seat for nothin" !!! I've tried and tried!

I'd love to go there. You need a machete!

Yes, it's brutal.

A lot of the cars, I'd say close to 90% of them have been there since I first went to this yard over 35 years ago.

I stopped there quickly this past summer, but followed the wrong path in the yard and ended up in the NW corner, not the NE corner. While I did see some GM cars, I didn't get to the mother load.

I think I see an oval tailight on that olds making it a 59. Look at that wild roof rack ahead of the glass on that visita.

Re the roof rack, good eye Ken, I didn't even notice that. I wonder what it's from, or if they actually offered such a thing?

That's a newer one but it sure would make sense to have that style on the first generation cars too

I bought some stuff off that Buick wagon-seat belts, door trim I believe, lower steering shaft as it was a 400 car I also believe, and possibly the dashpad-pretty sure it was the same car.The yard sure looks overgrown these days.I think you would need more than a machete-more like a brush hog-or maybe a bunch of goats or sheep to get it cleaned up.

I didn't spend too much time looking for 65 stuff Mark but he has a number of them there. I wasn't feeling very good and couldn't cover the yard at my usual speed. Of course you would be limited to interior and some of the body stuff for your car since these are all US models.

That is quite the overgrown bone yard. If you twist your ankle, trip or fall down, they might never find you in that undergrowth! I think perhaps that the next time you go there, you might need to take a drone and video system to locate your favorite classic and then hack your way in and out!

I don't know the what the ownership structure is there but it seems that nature is "reclaiming" the classics in the yard.  If the current owner is not present one day, perhaps a D9 Cat might be the cleanup tool, heaven forbid.

I can't tell you how many times I've failed or at least struggled to find a car I've seen there previously.

One man show, dad started it over 50 years ago. He doesn't crush anything unless it's 90's or newer basically. His wife says "crush it and retire". His response is "she doesn't understand....."

Best time to go is in the winter. The water is frozen and the foliage is down. I went there December 18th 2016 when it was -20 F, but it may have been my most productive day there as I could see everything I needed. A good pair of gloves were needed, but I stayed warm working on pulling car parts and surprisingly the bolts came out easy enough.

Yup, it would have been a stellar day if I'd been feeling better.

But hey, it's better to be sick and in an auto wrecking than sick on the couch like I was all day yesterday!

When I was there this past summer, they'd had heavy rain a couple days before so it was a bit muddy. They provided me with some bug spray, and I coated myself. I found myself in the mainly Chrysler & Ford areas, and it was so overgrown that you could be on the path, and not even see a car that was less than 10' away.

The GM area was probably not accessible because of the mud. It was later in the day, and while I could have made another wander to the GM area, dark clouds to the west caused me to continue down the highway.

I hope to make another visit someday.

That's pretty much what the foliage looked like when I was there last summer. The only thing I bought was a wiper blade off a late 60's GM.

Some of the yard is swamp, overgrown by bullrushes. Many of the cars in that area look like they drove there.

I took a picture of 2 57 4 door hardtops for the 57 lovers!

Yes, in a normal year you need rubber boots in there. I've seen the water line on some of the cars where it's up at the belt mouldings, I assume from a very wet year.

One of the cars out in all that mess is a 61 Olds bubbletop that looks like it drove to it's final resting spot. Such a beautiful car, totally gone to waste.
