when you ordered a 64 Chevelle SS with a six it came with those parts chrome from the factory. Original ones in good shape would be hard to come by

Is the 194 the same . ?  Are the 194 230 250 engines physically the same.

Mark

1964 chevelles and beaumonts came with a base 194 motor.  BUT if you ordered the 230 upgrade is was a hotter 230, even better than any other chevrolet for that year.

If you ever see a 64 chevelle or beaumont with a 230 emblem, it automaticly means there is a L61 chrome pack, there was no other 230 option in chevelles that year. and was on all chevelle/beaumont models, it had nothing to do with SS or SD's.  this L61 applied to both canadian and US cars.  US cars had the chevrolet script valve cover tho, and i believe the air cleaner lid was a different shape, but i could be wrong.

The hot 230 was an L61, and rated for 155 HP instead of the standard 230 in all other chevrolets and canadian pontiacs models rated for 140 hp-and no chrome parts

This L61 package included factory chrome valve cover, oil cap, dipstick, fuel lines and vac lines, including chrome modulator line on AT cars. and a chrome air cleaner cover. Even the valve cover bolts and holddowns are chrome, and the aircleaner wing nut.  I believe it was all due to carb setup and jetting, but i would have to go back to the books to see if there are other differences to boost the extra 15 HP,  doing this all from memory.

Edt:   it is possible that 1964 acadians and novas also got the L61, but i am not a nova expert.

The side lifter covers were never chrome from the factory on L61s.

Also the valve cover with the long indent down one side like in you pic, and a breather hole, was never used until around 1968 or later.  1964-67 was smooth.

Only the L61 230 155-horse came with the chrome accents. The valve cover, breather-type oil filler cap, air cleaner lid, dipstick handle, some say vacuum lines & fuel lines but I don't know about that, were all chromed. The U.S. cars said "Chevrolet" in raised cursive script on the valve cove while the Canadian cars were blank. Available in 1964 on U.S. Chevy II & Chevelle, Canadian Beaumont & Chevelle (not Chevy II or Acadian).

I remember the early Beaumont/Chevelle 230's having the chrome fuel line and other parts the 194 didn't get.

Thanks
Randy

Interesting. I have a frozen 230 at home that I picked up 4 or 5 years ago that has the chrome valve covers and air cleaner and I think dipstick. Stripped some of the pulleys and brackets for power steering off of it.

If it is all original with the carb still on, would be nice to see the numbers on the triangluar rochester tag.  Also i wonder what jet size it has?

It still has a carb on it but not sure of originality. Will check when I'm back in April. Been trying to pass it on to some one who can use manifolds and brackets and such.

The good old 230 six . Bore of a 283 and stroke of a 327.  Add two more cylinders and you have the 307.

Plus valves of a 283/307 (1.72" int / 1.5" exh), but not the rockers. The sixes have a 1.75 rocker ratio, not a 1.5 like the SBC.

It is really neat that people here have confirmed the chromed vacuum lines did actually make production.

Yup, but unfortunately the U.S. only. 1964 was a bad year for the Chevy II sales, especially in Canada. They dropped the convertible & 2-door hardtop bodystyles, the Nova SS & the entire 300 trim level along with the 3-seat wagon. Only in the U.S. did they bring back mid-year the hardtop & the SS within the 1964 Chevy II model run.

Excerpt from the Canadian '64 Chevy II brochure (note the scant 3 engine choices): Original-1964-Chevy-Ii-Nova-100-Sales-Br
