Unusual 67 Malibu Documented


Years back my nephew owned quite an unusual 67 Malibu. Here's a shot of the documentation from way back. I know this is the Beaumont section but because of the similarities I thought it was most appropriate here.

late dated build should be a 138 car if its an SS ?

I posted that seeing if anyone would catch it. I should have known you would!

This was done back in the 90's when GM screwed up the documents on the 36-38 cars. This was a plain Malibu, not even a Malibu SS. But what an unusual car. 283 glide with disc brakes, shoulder harness, buckets and console. AND a locking gas cap!

There was a 67 Malibu hardtop here in Morris in the 70's, cool car. Blue hardtop, 283, buckets, console and a vinyl top but not a Malibu SS.

Also F40 suspension . Would that make it a 12 bolt car ?

No it was a 10 bolt still.

Reason I know that is, in the early 90's he came here to visit with that car. While he was here, it developed a diff noise. We took it in to the shop at my brother's auto wrecking and discovered teeth missing on the crown. What an ordeal that turned out to be. My brother had a used crown and pinion but after numerous failed attempts to get the gear set installed and work without howling, we finally figured out the "new" crown and pinion must not be from the same diff, not a matched set! Oh we worked many hours on that car...

So  back in 1994 they probably incorrectly typed A51 as a sports option, but is should have just said bucket seats.   Because this is a plain malibu with buckets and console.

Was similar situation to my 67 custom convert,  not an SD, but has both a51 and d55

 Just wondering if same as in 69. In 69 you got a 12 bolt if a four speed was ordered or f40 was ordered.

No,  the earlier cars from 64-67, anyway.  F40 was just heavy duty suspension. All it was was heavier springs.  Most of my cars have it, even the 194 cyl sedans.

  Later f40 changed to mean something sportier i think?

Shoulder belts were very uncommon on the '67s and were unique in that the actual buckle, not the tang, was on the suspended shoulder belt and would have clips on the rear side panel. They were known to fly around and get buffeted when the windows were down (really annoying). For '68 when shoulder belts were mandated, they placed the male tang on the shoulder belt and were able to use a wire retainer to keep the shoulder belt stowed up on the headliner. Most of them were never pulled out from the retainer clip for the life of the car.

Disk brakes were fairly rare as well. That car with the P57 tire would have used puny 14x5 Rally Wheels.

N05 - Locking Gas Cap was not a factory option in the U.S. (except maybe on Oldsmobiles) but it was a factory option in Canada. Same thing with P32 - Spare Tire Lock (not that this car has it).

If D55 appears on the option list or trim tag, it ain't a Malibu SS. That, plus they dropped the Malibu SS around the 3rd week of November '66.

 

Note how close to the car's production date the engine is. Due to popularity the 283 Powerglide DE-code engines were getting installed as fast as they were coming in from St. Catherines. Different coded engines were produced in batches on different days, and obscure engine codes may have build dates much earlier than the car's assembly date while they sat & waited for orders (like 283 4-speed or big clutch, etc.)

 

Neat car, but I'm a little biased.

In Canada there were 1967 Malibu Super Sport cars. In Canada there were Malibu super sports but they were a trim option on a Malibu coupe. Because it was an option on a Malibu they had a 136 vin. The SS 396 was a different model, not a Malibu thats why the 138 vin. I had a friend that had a Malibu Super Sport in the early 80s. It was a 283 four speed with buckets and console. He put a 396 in it from an Impala and cloned it into an SS396.

Yes, lots of guys cloned their 66-67 Malibu SS's and Beaumont Customs into SS396/SD396 cars and what a shame that is today when we think about it! (Says the guy who will one day be driving his 427/speed Strato Chief clone)...
