from one of the better shows of the late 70s

there was some discussion of this car on the Barn find blog and there was a prediction it would go for 100k

apparently it is a formula 400 disguised as an Esprit

Good show, always watched it.
Apparently, James Garner was asked why Rockford didn't drive a Trans Am?
He said, a PI wouldn't be able to afford one on the money they make.....Realism

Watch the video, sometimes single tailpipe, sometimes dual tailpipes  sometimes none..., ya I'd say they used a lot of cars.

He is most famous for that reverse manoeuvre. Back then if someone said He did a Rockford, you knew exactly what they were talking about. Great show.

Yes, something like 4 per season. The auction car was used for recording. The control panel for all the microphones is still there. The microphones were placed all over the car- some recording the actors, others recording tire squeal, exhaust noise etc.

That first clip is pretty bad editing, the Rockford car changes between a 74 and 77, and Pontiac staff were really involved with this show?

I love that they dressed the car down from a Formula. You actually could get a 400 in the upscale Esprit from 1970 - 74, but it was only the small valve 2-barrel version with an automatic. Still you get the torque of a 400.

I pulled a 455 2bbl....out of a low mileage 72 Bonneville hearse......about 20 years ago.....

Small valve heads....and larger venturi BOP 2gc.....

Lotsa torque....for hauling stiffs...smile
