Turn Signal switch and no signal lights


So I got my steering wheel all together after replacing the turn signal actuator, found the fuse had blown, replaced that and the signals lights worked a couple of times and now nothing! My 4 ways still work and the horn works, it seems now there is no power going to the  turn signal actuator cam where there was before. the wires are hooked in right and have a good connection.

So my question is do the turn signal switches go themselves and I am look at replacing that? that is all I can think that could be wrong and it is 50 years old?

Any help would be appreciated.

check the plugs coming down the steering column maybe a connection there

I'm going to ask my usual question, do you have a wiring diagram for your car? It'd be in the shop manual.

Oh yeah never thought to check the brake lights, I have a shop manual but electrical isn't my strong forte, could just use the tester lighter I guess.

Ok, I'll take a stab at this. Presuming you're working on something similar to my 1970 models. GM used the same color coding for many years.

The power for the signal lights comes through the flasher. Not the flasher on the fuse block, that's just for the hazard lights. There's a second flasher somewhere under the dash. Power comes to it on a 12 gauge pink wire, check to see you've got 12v on both sides of the flasher. The power leaves the flasher on a 18 gauge purple wire, going to 4th pin of the signal light harness, between the 18 gauge yellow & brown wires.

The 12v on the 12 gauge purple wire comes from the ignition. It should also be present on the bottom pin in the middle of the fuse block (labelled IGN) when the ignition is on.

  Flasher must be plugged in (to complete circuit)  and would need to probe the wires(plug). Just didn't want him unplugging the flasher as some would do.  Was thinking ground...but if brake lights work thumbsup.gif Could also take his Hazzard flasher out and plug into turn flasher plug....this would tell if the flasher is NFG.

Yes, the flasher must be plugged in when checking the circuit as to why it's not working.

If not familiar with wire gauge sizes, a 12 gauge wire is larger than a 18 gauge wire. Kind of like shotgun gauges.

My money is that he's either got a bad flasher or it's become disconnected, or his turn signal switch is toast. Hopefully just a flasher.

I must have a loose connection somewhere, took flasher out and put it back in. It seems to work again, but the brakes lights weren't working either but are now. The wiring in the column is getting brittle,I may change the column out in the spring. Thanks for the ideas!

I had the same symptoms last summer in my 64 Chev. It was the flasher unit for the signals. swapped it with the one out of the emergency flashers to get me home and then replaced both
