Portland Swap Meet - April 5,6,7, 2019.......anyone going?

First trip to Portland Swap Meet, anyone going or have been there before?

We're going for the full three days......any recommendations for accommodations

and good food places would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

-G

I went in 2010, and stayed at a Best Western nearby. I imagine if you're looking for accommodations now your selection might be somewhat limited.

Have been 5-6 times, alway different and never really know what's gonna be there.

As for Hotel we stay at the fair filed inn and suite across the road from the expo center.

Walking distance for the friday and sat meet, can catch bus from expo to race track as well.

It usually rains so take a good jacket and a Hat. Can also get real windy.

Race track can real wet as stalls are on the grass.

Thursday is opening for the racetrack, 1 day earlier than expo center. usually some good stuff there.

Big building at expo center so if it rains head for the buildings. Walmarts is closed to hotel, cheap beer, LOL.

Any other question, just ask.  Use google street view and look around.

Not going to make it this year as I'm headed north through there a couple days before. Last year I stayed at the Motel 6 and booked fairly late. It is real handy as the bus comes to the back door. Rain jacket is essential. Fun meet with lots of great steak joints around for the evening meal.

Sounds like I should bump my parts budget up to a $1000. What I don't spend on parts...I'll spend on steak and beer!  Looks like another $20 in parts year!biggrin

Just for clarification, the swap meet at the race track "The Portland International Raceway Auto Swap Meet", and the "Portland Swap Meet" are 2 different things.

When I went in 2010, I understand it rained on Thursday, but the weather was fine when I arrived in Portland on Friday afternoon, and into Saturday.

I only went to the "Portland Swap Meet", and took the shuttle bus from my hotel to the swap meet. I started doing my usual thing of going up one side of the aisle, then down the other side, but realized there just wasn't enough time to cover everything, so I just went up the middle of the aisle looking to both sides. I use that same technique when at the Pomona Swap Meet.

Happy hunting!!!

What Clint says is right but they do work close together. There is a bus shuttle that goes back an forth between both venues. They are just a few minutes drive apart.

Spent two full days (still half a day left tomorrow) , walked 10 km. each, and have only

seen maybe 50% of the meet. It is impossible to see this meet in three days.

We started our day at 8:30 AM and finished at 7:00 pm the first day, the second day (today) we started at

8:30 am and finished at 5:00 pm (closing time).

Found a Pontiac tach for the 63, with the adapter  plate for $150. US......very happy with that find.

Awesome swap meet, highly recommend it should get put  on everyone's bucket

list of things to see and do.

Glad to hear George. Sounds like you aren't even getting wet if you are putting in long days like that. There used to be a guy inside at the expo that had all kinds of tachs but he was starting to show his age so not sure if he still is able to make it out.

We started at the Raceway on Friday, saw about 20% there but the rain started to get the best of us.

We then headed to the Expo building and  managed  to  make it through two of the five buildings

before it  closed up for the day. Saturday,  we finished the rest of the buildings and with some sunshine

ventured outside into the Expo grounds.By five o'clock (closing time) we managed to see about half

of the Expo grounds. This morning  it's raining  and we're debating  if we should  go back. The Expo grounds has pavement, the Raceway is on grass  and  can get real mucky as we found out.

As for the tach, the guy I dealt with, had bought up a lot of tachs from an estate sale, so it could have been

the old fellow you are referring to.

Outside of a couple of 55 or 56 Pontiacs and a 67 Firebird project, I  saw no other Pontiacs.....but then again we never got to see the whole swap meet.

I did take pictures of cars for sale, most projects were rust free. I'll try to post them when I get back.

Flying back to Calgary this evening.....very eventful swap meet. Well organized, this was the 55th year,

and I definitely would go back.
