US Exchange - YIKES!!

Last week I ordered a part from Jegs...US$54.95  Haven't ordered from them for maybe 25 years cause

they used to ship via UPS and you always  got a brokerage bill from UPS later on.......arrgh!

Jegs now ships via Fed Ex ground same as Summit so I thought I'd do a trial shipment and besides Summit didn't

have this part.

I get Summit stuff (shipped from Woodbridge, Ont) in less than 48 hours with Fed Ex ground.

US$54.95 + shipping + brokerage + hst = US$88.53 then Mastercard got in at a killer 37%.

Bill became CA$121.74. Leave it alone cause I want to see how this works out.

Jegs advise part is back ordered till middle April.......called up and cancelled the order.

Shipping/handling I understand and that was reasonable considering coming from Ohio.

But Mastercard hitting 37% when our dollar is at 75% is way over the top.

i have been ordering from Muscle Car Parts..they can get just about every thing you need.

On their web site every thing is listed in Canadian $. They warehouse in Detroit and they cross

the border the items you need (no hassles at the border or duty).Fortunately i live about 1 mile

from their business and pick up the goods no shipping. If you research their listings i usually

find several listings for the same part .They source from several different co..I bought a carpet

for my 57 Chev sport sedan for $318.00 Can. all-in..excellent fit & quality. They keep you updated

weekly of your order via email.

I bought an air cleaner from the Parts Place and had it shipped to my door. I calculated it and vs me running to the border to get it (30 miles to the parcel depot) I paid about $40 extra. In my mind it was well worth the $40 to just open my front door and sign the Purolator slip. I'll be doing that more.

Duty and taxes aside. Now we have to pay state taxes when parts are dropped to a mailbox in Washington State. Other border states have jumped on this bandwagon too.
EBay. Amazon. Jegs. Summit
They all have to charge the tax.

usually you can get a refund on state taxes. Unfortunately the amount sometimes isn't worth the hassle .

It was almost 40% percent when I was in Phoenix just after xmas

This is probably common knowledge but most Canadian credit card companies charge a  service charge on US currency transactions processed on a Canadian funds credit card.  For mastercard it is 2.5%

My strategy is to use a US funds credit card to avoid this fee.  Of course this credit card ( in this case the BMO US mastercard) has a yearly fee of 35.00 US.

I also have to have a sufficient balance in a US funds bank account to pay the credit card bill.

In my last US trip I put 1600.00 on my US credit card and so avoided transaction fees of 40.00 - which basically is the fee for my US funds mastercard

I really didn't come out ahead at all

Carl - I set up a 'no signature required' with Purolator.....works great.

Out here the only porch pirates we have to worry about are raccoons or skunks..........smile

Also check with your financial advisor if he isnt connected to a bank. My sons father in law is our advisor for our little retirement investment. Costs my wife and I around a couple thou a month to live down here for the winter so he exchanges 8g for me and I just get charged rack rate. Saves me 2-3% or whatever my Credit Union marks it up. He does it for all his clients. So for the winter probably helps a couple hundred bucks US. Pays for all my In and Out burgers and my gas to catch all the car events.

Well Jegs was pretty quick with the refund, came out to CA$121.12

Cost me 62 cents, guess I can live with that......and the beat goes on.
