Todd, are you avoiding windows because of security?

Put windows up high.

Our double garage has a 10' ceiling and we put two little windows up as high as we could. The natural light in there is wonderful. I think you will be sorry without some windows.

I'll get you a picture.

Sorry for the glare but you can see the rectangular window above the truck. There's one on each side of the garage.

I didn't really miss not having windows in my garage in Ontario.

It's so nice to walk in when the lights are off and it's not pitch black.

And when the window is this high it's sure not a security risk. Plus a lot of people wouldn't even fit through it if they did take a ladder and climb up there! And the fall on the other side would hurt too!

I figure a steel bar bolted vertically down the middle of the window inside is good security for a window. Use the locking nuts inside so they cant be unscrewed from outside?

I built mine 15 years ago. I had a permit for 24 by 48 by 9 feet high, but I ended up building it 24 by 36 by 9. If I had it to do again I would have built it 48 feet long in the beginning as my access to the back for further construction is limited, although I'm still considering adding the extra 12 feet. I also would have made it at least 10 feet high to accommodate a low overhead lift. Mine is 2 by 6 wooden frame on concrete slab, which has been fine, no issues. It's wired for 110 and 220. Initially I had two industrial electric heaters but the cost of operation was too high. Last year I put in a single mini-split heat pump and it has solved all of my heating, cooling and humidity problems. I highly recommend this type of heating system and am considering putting it in my house as well.

Agreed. I heat my house 95% of the time with a Fujitsu heat pump. Great units.

Updated drawings:

30 x 40.PNG

I had them put both doors to the right and the man door on the left wall at the back thinking that the area in the left side of the shop could be partitioned off to be a work room or office.

Another thought I had about windows was how nice it is to have fresh air.

On the farm we had a shed built 28 x 42 with a 12' ceiling. I got them to install a sliding unit as high up as they could. Zero security risk and sometimes it was nice to just be able to open the screened slider for fresh air. I didn't like opening the overhead doors because of mice. I had NO mouse issues in that shed in 9 years with my cars in there but the big doors were only open to drive in or out, or when I was working right by the door. And we had no cats on the farm to control the mice either.
