85 1ton 454 manifold bolt question

our volunteer fire dept has an 85 Chev 4 WD dually water truck, it has had a noisy exhaust leak for many years. We have it at a heavy truck dealership for an MVI and they would like to install new exhaust manifold gaskets on one side. What are the odds of a rusty manifold bolt breaking off in the block and if 1 or more does, is this an easy fix?

My thought was leave it as is, we dont drive it very far and when in use, its sitting pumping or sucking water. It has about 5000 KMs and was bought new.

Leave as is or repair ?

Thanks for any advice.

The odds of breaking a bolt in the head are very slim, at least based on my experience at the dealership. GM's small and big blocks are by far the best out there for not breaking manifold bolts. The bolt is a special shallow thread bolt that won't seize as easily.

However, that engine should not have a manifold gasket, it should be metal to metal. If there is a manifold gasket in there now it's not original. If it's leaking with a gasket, the manifold may be warped.

Are you sure it's not cracked? That is a common problem on them when they work hard.

If you have an exhaust leak due to warped manifold, like Carl said do not use a gasket. What will work is steel on steel with muffler cement.

Thanks for the advice, Ill crawl under this myself with the guy fixing it, I asked him if it was cracked, he thought it was not. GM still sell this head?

Any good reason not to leave it as is? The only risk is carbon monoxide?

If it is leaking but not yet warped and you keep running it that way, it will likely ruin the manifold. I think it's best to repair it now as it's likely cheaper now than if left to get worse.

Need a little more torque Darryl. This thing will cruise at 120 loaded with water and burn an unbelievable amount of gas. It has a 4 speed with that really low 1st gear.
