I just saw this in today's Winnipeg newspaper. "Softy" was thee guy in the 70's when I started into cars. Softy's Speed Shop was famous.

 

BRIAN BUCHAN (SOFTY) January 23, 1940 - March 28, 2019 It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing Brian Buchan (Softy) on March 28, 2019, at the age of 79. Brian is survived by his wife of 56 years, Joyce; his children, Brian Jr. (Lorelei), Barb (Kevin), Jamie, Joey (Angie) and Belinda (Reg); brother John; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Brian was known for his love of old cars. He was the owner of Softy's Speed Shop for 50 years. He had a willingness to help anybody who needed it, whether they could afford it or not. Mass will be held on Thursday, April 4, 2019 at 11:00 a.m., at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 4588 Roblin Blvd., Winnipeg. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society. Condolences may be left at seaonsfunerals.ca

Shame. Been to his shop and met him once. Sold me exhaust manifold gaskets for my problematic '81 Fleetwood Brougham Diesel.

Friendly and as you say well known in and about Winnipeg. Like they say, a library has burnt down..

Sorry to hear this, a hot rod institution in Winnipeg! Softy, got his nickname as a kid as his parents owned an ice cream shop.

I definitely spent some time and some $$ in there... my cragars are from there amongst other parts!

Very sad for sure and will be missed. Bought stuff from softy's speed shop from the swap meet and just last year from his 

long list of neet stuff on Kijiji .

I room had bought parts there, I believe it was his daughter I talked to on the phone . Sounded like a time capsule !  Was on my list to stop inif I was in the Peg !

 I went to see him last year when you told me about his ad on Kijiji for a Hurst shifter adapter plate that I needed. He sure knew his stuff still, even though he wasn't a young man any more.

Oh wow, that's very cool. Softy was a name everyone knew for decades if they were at all involved with cars.
