E Bay and selling stuff. What are your thoughts.

E Bay and selling stuff on there. What are your thoughts.

I have a ton of old automotive stuff that i have been selling on Kijiji for a number of years and lately i have been thinking of E Bay. I know a lot of folks call it Evil Bay and i wonder why. I know you need a Pay Pal account and you have to give up a lot of banking information but is it a good thing or a bad thing. I have had very mixed feelings from folks that i have spoken to about this very topic over the years. I would appreciate any "real world" experiences on the matter. Thank you and cheers.

I quit selling there a few years back. I never got burned but there's a couple of reasons why I quit.

1) The fees. Between Paypal and ebay fees, prepare to give up somewhere in the area of 13%-17% if I remember right.

2) No recourse as the seller. The worst feedback you can leave if you get scammed is a neutral. The buyer can leave you a negative, claim he never got his parcel and ebay will side with him every time. They will claw back his money from you and you are left with no item, no money, negative feedback plus you are out the cost of shipping it. I love Kijiji and forums, it's worked great for me.

I put up an ad on Ebay and have to keep renewing it at a fee if I remember right.  I am in the same boat with a ton of parts from my  67 Impala but never seem to get the initiative to post the items.

I have taken the photos to support the ads but no ambition to sit for a few days posting.   Can you sign up as a store and post everything in one location under your *store*

I have had success with Kijji with selling some household items after the sale of my daughters house.  All transactions were without haggling and customer paid the asking price.

The selling fees are pretty high. I sold a few diecast and was shocked when I got my fee bill. They also charge a "commission" on your shipping charges! Still if you have something to sell that only caters to a limited audience eBay is the way to go.

Carl is correct on the fees .

I still sell some excess parts on eBay, but it is slowing down more and more each year . I've never been scammed , and everything I ship is tracked and never lost a package .

You really can't ignore the size of the USA market , as that is where the buyers are .... (99% of my buyers are USA based , and very , very little from Canada).

Also , right now . the US $ exchange is in our favor , which translates into more CDN $ for you and even covers the fees and some of the postage too.

In my opinion , Kijiji is a real waste of time .

I agree with Howmac.   With the current exchange rate you basically get the Canadian equivalent of the US selling price.  So if something sells for $100 US you get $100 Canadian.

I sell parts on both E-bay and Kijji.  The majority of the time the smaller parts sell better on E-bay and the larger parts sell better on Kijji.

Carl I just sold something on ebay and the buyer said that he never got the package from me.  When the buyer complained Ebay sided with me because I had a used tracking and it showed the package was delivered.  Ebay also blocked him from providing any feedback. (So that is opposite to your experience)

Before Ebay sided with me I decided to pit a claim into Canada Post (I always use the Post Office to ship parts).  Canada Post spoke to the buyer, the buyer told Canada Post that he did not receive the parcel......and for what ever reason Canada Post paid out the claim. That really shocked me, I would have bet money that claim would not have been approved.  I have the cheque at home, I need to cash it next week and then I will reimburse the buyer.

I just had to share this since it just occurred and it was totally opposite your experience.

I've sold stuff on eBay over the years, mainly when I wasn't working and wanted to earn a few bucks by selling some of my excess car parts. I never had a problem, even when payment was allowed by money order, etc. With everything going through PayPal it made things simpler, but added to the fees.

While yes the fees add up, you're selling to a broader audience which potentially drives the selling prices up. If I recall, you get 6 photo's for free, and if you want to add more it's at a nominal fee. I'd have my photo's prepared, as well as the subject line and description pre-typed in MS Word, so I just cut and pasted the into into to eBay.

I sent everything via Canada Post, typically with a tracking #, and most things arrived in due time. My listings indicated I'd only ship to Canada & the USA. As I'm in Calgary, I'd estimate shipping to Florida via Canada Post's website, switch it to US funds, then add a bit onto that as ebay takes a chunk of the shipping amount. My description would indicate shipping amount.

I say go for it.

Tried to sell on Ebay a couple of times...stuff never sold, but I was still charged a fee from ebay? So I listed parts that never sold and still had to pay Ebay for the listing and lost money! Have never listed since. I might be doing something wrong but can't see why I'd pay a fee if something doesn't sell?

PayPal is a great thing, and I've never had any problems ... buying or selling.

As for eBay, I have over a thousand transactions as a buyer, and none as a seller ... so I can't help you there.

KiJiJi has never let me down as a seller, even though you get into some "strange" situations. KiJiJi seems to attract some "different" people.biggrin

I have a new outlet as a seller on PEI (Summerside area only) ... a small internet auction house. They work well. They do everything, but they do charge 20%. All I do is drop the items off, and confer with the auctioneer with any special requests. There might be a similar small e-auctioneer in your area.

Yup, I think you were doing something wrong.

I have bought and sold loads of of items on eBay, Kijiji, Craigs list and had great success. I list on eBay an item in US funds what I want it for in Canadian it sells and the exchange cancels out the fee and three parties are happy. I have had minor problems though but they all worked out well.

One example, a fellow from Chile bought a pair of Deluxe emblems and a horn button for a 65 Beaumont he was trying to restore. He wanted to buy more items I had but could only afford the two items. I mailed them without tracking because international tracking is really expensive. The next day I figured I would pay it forward and send packaged up a Beaumont fender scrip and a pair of door panel emblems and threw in a Beaumont ad I had for free and sent them down the next day. About two weeks later I get an email from him stating I sent him the wrong package and he did not get what he paid for. I asked him to tell me what he got and it was the contents of the second package, the first one never made it. I informed him that I will refund him the monies and not to worry it will be covered. He suggested that we wait till the shipping due date arrives and go from there. The date came and still no package, I immediately issued a refund and the fellow sent back the funds with a note stating that because I was so generous with the second package that I keep the money. He was just pleased to get a few more pieces for his car.

Two and half months later I get an email from him, to both our surprise the first package finally showed up. I guess the Chile mail system is the same as ours.

I had an eBay purchase from Japan show up 2 months late ... the seller gave me a refund 1+ month in. When I told him I finally got the CD, he said it wasn't worth the trouble, just keep it for free.

I haven't done it yet but I'm thinking about doing so for the stuff I have that is likely to find a market in the US. You can't beat the current exchange rate benefit; maybe I can use it to offset the cost of some of the things I have to buy from the US now for my projects.

In australia, I have better selling luck on facebook groups. Ebay takes horrendous fees and now we also pay GST on overseas purchases. Rarely sell on ebay.
