That has to be absolutely one of the coolest car stories ever......and he is right, the sound of it just makes you smile!

I love that it's not all restored and shiny. You can see all the trim is very original with dings and tarnished spots.

I love that the story is told by a guy who really isn't technically deep into impalas or 409's. He just knows he has something magic.

Bloody 'ell. Must 'ave been quite a few P to buy it and bring it over from Ameriker!

Cool story and car. Basically a factory car for racing (carpet and radio even).

I need a set of those mufflers. The car was converted to rhd while in Aussie and only returned to USA a couple of years ago where it was converted back to original. That may be the original 409, it was tuned a bit for the race and had modified brakes and suspension. Gurney had a wheel center break after leading the Race for most or all of it.

Google Dan gurney 1961 Chevrolet, there is a black and while film of the original race, and plenty of information on the car. Its a really amazing story.

It is kind of funny to think about a bunch of British toy cars racing against this 409 brute. Jaguar had to have this 61 banned, of course they did. How else could they win. Having this 61 stock looking with a full interior and no roll bar is another snub at all those British toy cars it was racing against. We all know who the real winner was in that race.

Read this series of posts about the car. It says the car had the original 409 from the 61 race.

The car was ordered from GM by Gurney to be raced in England- a quote from the 348-409 post-"One thing that blew me away was that Bill Fowler in early 1961 drove the car from Las Vegas to New York on his honey moon before it was loaded on the ship for England. What a way to run in a fully prepped race car!!"
