RPO code question for the GM Gurus...

So decided to replace the original carpet in our new 64 Chevy USA built.  We were lucky to find an intact build sheet and get it out and open with minimal damage.

No no surprises except for one...

A49 delux seat belt with ret.

seems normal enough but there are no holes or repairs in the carpet. (undoubtedly the orig carpet)  I looked and the option code does not appear to be in my 1964 facts dealer sales albums (all other codes listed are) and found an interesting paragraph that states belts standard in corvette and greenbrier only. All other are optional dealer installed accessories.

why is it on the build sheet? Does it mean the provisions are installed in the factory and dealer installs belts at customers request?

Does the floor pan have the threaded mounts on the bottom side of the pan? If so, I bet it means provision for, as you state. However, it does seem odd that it would say "deluxe with retractors" because the provisions wouldn't be any different with the retractor vs. without.

Would the optional belts be placed in the car for the dealer to install at customers request I wonder. Seems odd but mounts are there. Sales brochure says optional equipment.

The re-tractors would look like this, right?

All floors came with factory front seat nuts in the floor for seat belts in 62 and 63 and maybe before. My 63 Vert came with factory rear seat belts, Ill have to see if the rear belts seem to have a factory installed setup for bolts and nuts. The rears had no floor brace under there for a nut to be imbedded in for the belts, you use a very large washer on the back side of the floor pan.
The belts in the 63 were already removed when I got the car, they came with the car and have no retractors. The 63 vette had no retractors either, maybe that became available in 64?

Perhaps yes, My question is why they show on the build sheet but no evidence they were actually ever installed in the car?

If A49 (according to this site, the A47 was seatbelts without retractors) is on the build sheet and the carpet is original and has no holes for the bolts for the belts, then the belts must have been dealer installed and came in a box in the trunk? The A49 would have told the factory to include them in shipping and maybe to drill the rear holes for them to be bolted in, are the rear holes for the bolts there and look factory?

My 62 Chevies built in Canada that came without seatbelts had the nuts welded into the floor braces in front and those nuts/holes were covered with a small rubber on the outside. I may have a picture of that rubber.

The factory shipped many things in boxes in the trunk to be installed by the dealer like the hubcaps. I remember the early 60's Vauxhalls from England came without the rubber floor covering, it came in the trunk and the dealer installed it. I wonder if GM did this with carpet?

There was a large auction a few years ago at a Chevy dealer out west, Iowa or somewhere, a bunch of NOS never delivered cars were in that auction, including a 63 Impala 2 door HT, I can't remember but the carpet may have been in the trunk in that car.

The rubber covers are in this pic of a 62 Bel Air 4 door floor. The nuts were on the rear footwell.

my 64 SS came from the factory with the carpet & seat bels installed. The seat belts were orderd. The carpet was standard. as far as I remember.  I think it would be rediculas for the dealer to have to install the carpet. Having to remove the seats etc ?

What you say makes sense NOS about the seats, but I since looked up this car and the front carpet came in the trunk, pics in this article. The seats are not installed on top of the carpet, it fits around the seat supports.

Very interesting read.

That was a good read Don. Makes sense about the carpets. This would have been before those clear plastic sheets used today to cover new carpets. I wonder what year they stopped tossing the carpet in the trunk?

My '67 Chevelle Assembly Manual says "Carpet furnished by Fisher and installed by Chevrolet". It made sense for Chevrolet to install the carpet as Chevrolet would have to install floor shifters & consoles as required, after the body drop.

Actually carpet installed at the dealer for a car that came standard with carpet is a new one on me. Those Lambrecht survivors can teach us a lot.

Looking at the 1964 Chevrolet specs as downloadable from the GM Heritage site in .pdf format, it mentions A49 Belt Unit, Custom Deluxe seat, Retractor type. In the context of carpeting being dealer installed, and belts referred to as a "unit", it sounds like the belts were provided by Chevrolet and shipped in the trunk for dealer installation (like hub caps & antennas).
