Our "maybe" flood for 2019

If anyone cares to see how things are going in the Red River Valley this year, here's a link to a still camera mounted on a pole where the highway crosses the river.  Likely about 6' more before it's on the bridge. It's gonna be close whether it makes it or not. They may or may not have to close the highway.

Kinda dark right now, can't really see anything.

On the far right side of the picture you can see the Cat parked up on top of the dyke. It sounds like they will start hauling dirt in early next week and put it across the highway to close up the dyke.

New Brunswick is supposed to get some heavy flooding this weekend as well.

Is it from rains or snow melting?

Likely a dumb question from a prairie boy but our flooding is all from melting in the US that flows this way.

Wow, you guys must have had lots of snow. We have little bits left in the shelterbelts but otherwise it's been pretty much gone for a week now. We are contributing nothing to this high water, it's all coming from ND and MN where they had a nasty winter.

The dyke protecting Morris runs past our back yard. I stood on top today to see how much water is against the other side. The water in the ditch at the bottom is river backup. I think we should be fine!

You can see way off in the distance at the top of the picture where the Red River is spilling out slightly onto the farmland (if you look very carefully on the other side of the trees along the river.)

They did but we (PEI) didn't get a lot of snow. Northwestern PEI got more than where I am as they are often affected by systems hitting northern NB.

RE: Our "maybe" flood for 2019

The Saint John River floods just about every spring, from what I've heard from people who live near there.  I know Northern New Brunswick did get a lot of snow this winter - oftentimes when we were getting rain or mixed precipitation, they were getting snow, and lots of it.  Plus, it has rained a lot recently, which also causes increased snow melt to combine with the rain, so I believe this year is a little worse than most.

The son of a friend lives in the usual flood area near Fredericton and gets flooded pretty much every spring.  He says he would like to move away from there, but apparently can't find anybody who would buy it due to the flooding situation - I don't know how he puts up with it, actually.  It would drive me nuts.

Carl I used to live In Melita and when the water came up from North Dakota, it flushed up fish with it. I am thinking that you could catch fish in your back yard?

Yup, it brings the silver bass and I think some sort of bottom feeders as well. I suspect there could be cats and sauger as well but I haven't caught them.

My sister has spent her last 52 years in the Melita area and now lives right in town.

Lots of places having a flood of the century, 2nd time in 3 years. The weather has changed a lot since I was a kid.

We moved here 6 years ago and I've seen changes in such a short period of time. I was warned I'd never get a break from cutting the grass as PEI never gets the droughts and hot weather like SW Ontario. Well the last two summers my grass was as burnt as it was in Ontario. We had a lot of windless, hot and humid days. Also we had way more thunderstorms last year. I heard somewhere if this keeps up we could start seeing the odd tornado here.

Opposite here. I guess because we are so close to the Gulf. Heavy dew and early morning fog contribute to green grass all summer and we have a cool breeze almost every day.

Beauce Quebec got bad flood waters also.

Our weather has certainly changed since I was a kid.

Used to get lots of snow consistently through the winters, now our weather is all over the place - no precip for a long time, then hit with a weather bomb.  The majority of winters recently, I've only had to shovel a few times during the winter.  When I was a kid, constant shoveling throughout the winter.

Also, anecdotally it seems like we get hit with a higher number of severe storms.  For decades we used to get a high number of lesser weather events, sometimes rain and drizzle lasting for a week or two at a time, but now it seems like we have more periods of no precipitation bookended with heavy rains and high winds.

My stories are all anecdotal, but combined with the data of seeing year after year of record breaking flooding, with unprecedented forest fires in the west, it seems pretty obvious that things are changing, and rather quickly.

Weird winter in Edmonton this year too. Started off looking like it was going to be mild, and little snow...then from New Years day it was on. We got a ton of snow in Jan and Feb followed by a 6 week cold snap that had us in the -20 to -30 C range without any let up. That was a long, hard 6 weeks! Second week of March someone flipped the weather switch and it got warm. Not for just a day or two, but for the next month plus. By the last week of March all our snow was gone, and the street sweepers were out almost 4 weeks early.

Flooding here isn't too much of an issue, but the high water time is usually middle of May to middle of June.
