RE: Winnipeg coffee break (WITH A SPECIAL GUEST)

And to top it all off, Ken brought me an NOS spring ring battery cable for my car......... (and to top it off, he gave it to me......)

When Ken visits, it's a guaranteed great day.

 Rats, I didn't take any....

I guess we'll have to wait for Ken to show them off. They look great.

Looks like a great evening, had a feeling it might be Ken taking the Beaumont on a road trip. Seemed a long way just for coffee, but getting tires installed and balanced makes it worth while.
Too bad I had to take the little guy to swimming last night, oh well next time maybe.

Except for Kens frown, it looks like everyone had a good time!!

I've been using balancing fluid for years, it's especially nice on alloy wheels.

Weights aren't much problem on steel to but can sure be corrosive on alloy.

Thanks
Randy

Ken sent me a message a little while ago that he is back home safe and sound. He says the Beaumont is ready for another 2000 miles! Pretty cool, a 2000 mile trip trouble free in a 53 year old car...

Way to go Ken. They were made to drive. Not just look at. And a big plus when you can do both.

Hi guys, finally woke up.

It was a great if somewhat misguided trip. Kind of a long commute to get a set of tires!

Had it's moments though. I had to drop my sister in law and her luggage off at the Edmonton airport on the way out so that was a bit out of the way and the driving condition were definitely wintery on that day.  The poor car was totally coated with icicles as we rolled up to the departure area so I was kind of thinking this wasn't such a great spring trip. I  tried to outrun the blizzard for the rest of the day in Highway 13 out of the province. I had to stop at Lougheed to see what was actually there. not much except a fairly decrepit antique shop with a really lonely proprietor.  Took me an hour to get out of there.

Stopped on Provost for the night as I was feeling the rotten driving conditions by that time.  The next day I made as far as Brandon. Mileage around 20 MPG on the low profile 60 series tires  that I was swapping out in Winnipeg which is OK but not great. (I was driving into a strong Southeast wind at the time though.) Still everything was working well and I even gave the heater a fairly good workout in the chilly mornings.

Next day I met up with Carl at his work and we mounted those new beauties on the vintage 1967 15x5 ralleys I had brought with me  in the trunk and then went to his place to swap them out.  I actually got to drive carls 427 so that was worth the whole trip really.  What a beauty! Nice understated, understressed docile horsepower. Love that style!

Took a ride around town to check the new skins out and they were nice and smooth but a lot taller (as per my spec) than the ones I came with so I thought I'd see better mileage on the way back.  Didn't work out that way though as the wind turned to howling straight from the west for two straight days. I was getting  exactly the same numbers  either way so I guess that just what a 283 with a Powerglide will do.  Lots of passing umph though.  Basically a real delight to drive except for battling wind gusts for two days which does get a bit tiring.

Stopped in to have a quick visit with 67 poncho  he was out of town so no luck there.

As for the last stretch I decided to enter in Alberta through the most northern road which goes through Cold Lake. Not a great idea as the northern Saskatchewan roads can really suck. (Highway 26 which was called paved on the map was probably the worst goat trail I have driven for years. Car handled that pounded out mess beautifully. On the other hand once I got further north up the Pierceland Highway 55 was brand brand new and beautiful.

Anyhow home for while.

I have to get the car's  stance adjusted a bit as the front is too high and get the eight track working dependably but otherwise not much seem to need work.

I'll post some pictures soon but my wife is  bugging me so have to go.

A couple of things to keep in mind Ken.

1) I think the trip west is actually uphill...seems to me your elevation is higher than our's.

2) Your odometer is now showing less mileage with the taller tires. If you were getting 20 mpg before and still showing 20 now, you are actually doing better than before. The difference appears to be about 5%, so it's not a lot at 20 mpg but it is 3 mph at 60 mph.

Hadn't thought of that. Have to check it with the GPS to be sure.

Coming up.  Unfortunately the car sits a bit high at the front due so some aftermarket front springs (I think) so I've got to get the front down other wise they look great on there.  They are a tall highway tire as opposed to a low profile  street cruising tire but I figure to make a lot of miles on her this summer for air attack work so they will work well.

Here are pics of the 15x5 ralleys on the Beaumont with 70 series tires.  Kind of tall and skinny but pretty close to what would have been offered in 1967 I think.  I have painted the centres of the small non disc caps red on one side and black on the other to see which I would go with. Carl favours black; I'm still kind of not sure.

After the tire mounting and appropriate road test of the new tires (and a mighty smooth ride it is in that sweet little Beaumont on the new rubber), we had a quick G8 GT road test, followed by a test drive of my Strato Chief!

And by the way, I never mentioned it but I had to let Ken test drive my car because that is his old steering column he sold me so that I would have a floor shift column in my car when I did the 4 speed conversion...
