AC Question

Our daily driver Honda Accord doesn't have working AC. The compressor engages when I turn it on and I pressed the schrader valve on the AC line and there was some pressure. I watched a "how to" video on pulling down the system and adding refrigerant. Am I correct that even if there is some R134 in the system you would still need to evacuate it out as you'd have no idea how much is needed to fill to spec if you left some in?

Ideally it's best to evacuate the system, but freon added to the system should be okay.

Just remember adding the freon maybe a waste of money if it eventually leaks again quickly.

Lost freon means it went somewhere. usually a leaky "o" ring in the system.

If it's a slow leak ,it may cover you through the summer with enough cold air.

At some point I would replace all the o rings and evacuate the system, and recharge the system.

Just need a decent vacuum pump to evacuate the system, once the repairs are done.

Don't forget freon oil may have been lost along with the freon, so that should be added.

Some freon cans have the oil in them....might be a good choice to purchase.

Watch your final pressure for the system, don't overload what the specs call for.

This freon may work for any leaks you may have.

So...I can just add a can of refrigerant directly to the system? Do I add to the low pressure line? I still need to draw a vacuum don't I? I have to admit AC is one system on a car I never bothered trying to learn. Can you tell?

Usually if there isnt enough Freon the A/C compressor wont run. The low pressure switch controls the clutch circuit. Be aware that the stuff sold at Princess Auto, Walmart etc. Isnt Freon, but a mixture of propane and butane. If you add some to your A/C and then need to go to a shop, they may not repair it. They cant dispose of the contaminated Freon.

yes don't use that crap gas. 134a only. I have been doing this for years. If the clutch kicks in now and again on the compressor that means you have some gas in there and only a very small leak. As you add the gas you will see the clutch engage longer each cycle till it runs with out kicking out. When the clutch is engaged it draws the Freon in. sure the best way is to take it in but you could be looking at a large bill

Wouldn't it be practical to have a leak test done first. Leak test should show up just how bad the system is.
Then you know just what you are chasing.
Gives you an accurate picture of the system and the DOLLARS needed to fix it.

Lowside......see first part of this youtube.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5B7kUqjWCxg

A vacuum pump can be made from an old fridge/freezer compressor.

AC gauges always a good investment.

Lots of videos on youtube and on Iinstructables site.

Thanks guys. I have a timing belt to replace first. If I don't screw that up I'll move on to the AC!

Just a thought... Your system may already have a dye in it so you could use a black light to check the connections for leaks

Where does a person buy R134a freon? I'm having trouble finding it  locally.

I see it on Amazon, but shipping is very expensive.

I read somewhere that R134a is banned in Canada for retail sales and can only be used by a

licenced A/C mechanic, and can only be bought in bulk and not in cans.......Is this true?

Where are people getting the 12 oz. cans?  (U.S. does sell it in retail stores)

Image result for r134a calgary

That is true George. In the US I can buy it off the shelf but if they snag you at the border they will take it away.

In Canada you need an A/C certification number, you can't buy it unless you have your ticket.

I can't even sell parts over that counter that in any way involve opening up a sealed A/C system.

As much as I'd like to get the R134a, I go with the Princess Auto stuff...

it's on sale this week, so I'll be cool  wink  and take advantage of the sale.

As long as you know the shops won't touch your A/C once you put that stuff in there. We sell lots of it at work, the farmers use it in their equipment but we can't do anything with it using our shop equipment.

I weighed that thought after you mentioned it, and wanting this for a 1997 Dodge Handicap van on it's last leg, i decided

that to worry of a shop not working on it doesn't even come into the picture. This way is cheaper and will give comfort during the month of July

before we part with the van. My 93 Nissan truck need some air conditioning and that too won't require a shop to ever work on it.

With around $150.00 an hour becoming the new norm for auto and truck repair, I limit my driving to preserve our regular driving car......

I'm more worried about repair costs than the price of gas.

I purchased the kit at Princess Auto. Hopefully I'll find the time to try it out. I'll let you all know how it goes.

 I too bought the kit.

What can I say....easy peasy. Rocket scientists need not apply for this job.

Can't make a mistake with the kit....fitting will only fit the low side.

Turn the car and and the air conditioner and fan on....

I screwed in a sealant can first.

Hooked up the low side fitting and turned the handle, shaking the can upside down and watching the gauge.

The gauge will bounce around for a few seconds and then settle down. Keep adding until your in the right zone on the gauge.

Turn off when you reach a pressure in the zone your happy with.

Once the sealant started going in, the compressor clutch kicked in and activated the compressor. At first the clutch engaged a little bit,

but within about 3 minutes it was staying on longer. I emptied the sealant can , took off the fitting for the low side.

I then screwed the refrigerant can into the handle, and plugged the fitting into the low side.

This can (with refrigerant left over) brought it up to the max pressure area on the gauge. I let the car run for 10 minutes.......nice and cold inside.

I did the same for my old Nissan truck (never had air in the 10 years I owned it) it too is cold.

Total time to put refrigerant in each vehicle.....5-7 minutes.

Like I said easy peasy.

Lots of stuff on youtube showing how easy to do it.
