Garage door question

So I'm buying a workshop/barn located next to my property. It has the traditional sliding doors. I'd like to remove them and frame for a roll up door. Is there a standard set of measurements as to how much wider and taller the opening needs to be than the door? Google isn't helping. Does it depend of the brand of door I use and should I chose that first and get specs from the manufacturer?

This might give you some more information.

I'm think the door manufacturers would give you the actual  specs for the opening.

Your finished opening is exactly the door size. 10x 8 high door is that finished. If you have an unusual ceiling height like 96 they can make a combination of panels usually pretty close to 86 or what ever number you need. Typically you dont go higher than a foot less of the ceiling height. If you do go higher you have to use specialized low clearance hardware.

Nothing fancy. 90x60 in size. It has power and a well. Solid bones but needs a bit of cosmetics. You can see the front sliding doors that will need to go. Also, someone installed a man door on the sliding door at the side.

I'm likely going to remove that side sliding door, frame it in and cover it with siding.

Rear shot. On the left is an addition that was added fairly recently. Both are on concrete slabs. As you can see the addition used to house cattle and has an open wall that had a canvas like covering that could be opened and closed as needed. That will need to be closed in. Since it faces south I may install windows some day.

As I mentioned its still quite solid. Good concrete floor. The room on the left at the back is insulated with plywood walls and a good size (about 32x24). I'll install a roll up door there and that will be where the hoist goes.

With that "closed in" it will be easier to initially just heat that area. There's a large room to the right of it that is partially insulated. It'd make a great paint booth some day

As Jerel said typical installation is finished door size but somewhat dependent on exact door mfg.

https://www.pole-barn.info/garage-door-installation.html

heres a couple details that may help and link to site but just a starting point. Garaga and Clopay are 2 major mfg's that have a lot of info on their websites regarding install details.

Hope of some assistance

Regardless, cool barn/shop. If that were next to me it would cost 1/2 Miillion....and that's with no extra land. hmmIMG_3372.JPGIMG_3373.JPG

Oh it's not moving. I bought it and a couple of acres surrounding it with the option of buying the whole field in a couple years time.

It was less than a million I bet but best not to make grown men cry by saying what you paid for it.

Has all the makings of a great shop and storage.
With it's size maybe also a bit of a money maker?

I'm hoping it will be a source of income plus there should be some room for winter vehicle storage. Maybe a Canadian Poncho museum?
