Article in our local paper this morning about using trail cams for security, some can now send the pics to your phone.

I have been thinking about installing security cameras on my house and shop. I want 120V cameras with wireless capability so I can install them up in the peak of the gables on both buildings adjacent to my motion detecting lights. They now make a motion detector light with an integrated camera which would definitely meet my needs, or would they?

I do not want a subscription service associated with anything I install and want a camera with night vision that will not be negatively affected by a yard light coming on adjacent to it. It seemed that the combination unit might be the answer but reviews of them complain about the quality of the cameras.

I am interested in what expertise or experience an input in this area anyone might have so I will be watching this thread!

Not an expert by no means,but I received this for my birthday and it doesn't require a subscription.....

but does require wiring. I haven't installed it as of yet.

There's lots of choices for security systems on Amazon. Many of them allow monitoring from your phone.

There was a show on CBC recently showing how the cameras could be connected to the internet and the home owner was totally in the dark about them being watched.

Many devices were found to be vulnerable as they contacted a few homeowners who did not know the world was watching.

They had a hacking crew connect to the house from a van parked on the street and was able to control every device in the house.

Scary..... Ensure that the setup does not allow any outside interference.

The reason for this is they don't change the factory passwords.

I use Arlo Pro wireless available at Best Buy. Very good except they quit working if camera is outdoors and temperature goes below -20C. Check it out.

I know I don't want it sending to my phone (since I rarely use my phone plus it has no data plan anyway!).

I know I want a good quality camera (as recommended by an RCMP officer). He said the cheap camera images and videos are useless to them because they don't show facial features clearly enough, or license plate numbers either.

I know I want one that's wired to 120 as Mike said.

But beyond that, the more I look, the more overwhelming it is. I have tried Amazon a couple of times and I would need to retire just to sort through all the options on there.

Carl we have recently installed two cameras. The bigger one, model # SD50225U-HNI and the smaller one which may suit you is model # DH-IPC-HDW4631C-A. With both cameras we installed extra infra red which more than doubles what can be seen at night. Google the numbers to view what the cameras can do.
